Thank you, Wikipedia, for introducing me to Fridtjof Nansen - Nobel Peace Prize winner, groundbreaking zoologist, and the first person to ski cross-country across Greenland; whose picture looks exactly like you'd imagine a guy who makes up his mind to ski across Greenland in the 1800s would look.
Vintage photograph of Fridtjof Nansen staring directly at the viewer, with a thick, curled mustache, short and unruly hair, and a heavy fur coat.

This is the first time in many years I'll be living somewhere that has a real autumn, so yeah, I'm thinking some stuff's going to get mulled.

Yeah! Saw you posting about Chicago the other day and thought - I ought to DM that new neighbor of mine and get to know them!

Not gonna complain about a day with a moment like this.

Met for a career consult provided via SAG-AFTRA (love those membership benefits!) and it was quite something to hear "Welcome to Chicago! You don't need new headshots, your reel is terrific, and you're doing all the correct research and legwork." Never more surprised than when I do something right!

The train ride was great. Read some Shakespeare and wrote 500 words of a novel on my tablet. Beats sitting in traffic.

Early train from the suburbs to Union Station; now catching a bus to get to a meeting followed by a recording session. Still a lot to learn about navigating Chicago, but so far today's plan is working. Might go to bed earlier next time, though. I see you, sleepy eyebags.

The strike forced excruciating choices on so many; and I get that some people felt too vulnerable to take any risks. But some people also made the choice to actively do harm to their fellow VAs privately, publicly, or both, and that's still hard to process.

Tell your friend that's a terrific piece, love the style. And thank you; I will always be grateful for the time I had with the role. And I'm glad a few people out there still remember.

My experience is that those conversations still happen, but since they're behind-the-scenes it can take longer for word to trickle around and you can't always be sure everyone has heard. It's messy but good people work at it every day.

If it even became common knowledge that the majority of us aren't making a living doing it, even when we're lucky enough to have convention invites coming in, that would shift the conversation in a massively-helpful way.

In the past few years I have come to know some of the most generous, courageous, community-committed people I've ever met, as well as some of the most cruel, petty, vindictive, and selfish. I don't know what the solution is; but maybe if we keep talking, smarter people than myself will get an idea.

These are the things people who care about what we do need to know about the challenges we encounter behind-the-scenes. Being non-stop ✨🌞POSITIVE🌞✨ may serve a VA's online persona, but it does a disservice to public perceptions of this career. It takes so much more resilience than you assume.

The people behind this are friends and hoopy froods that I'm all-but permanently rooting for. Like, if they firebombed my car I'd still be like "indies deserve all the 5-star reviews they can get."

Wrote a new scene today for a screenplay I haven't worked on in eight years. Funny ol' life where sometimes projects you thought long dead suddenly shiver back to life.

I love my partner because I showed her "John Wick - Chapter 4" and at one point her theatre fight director brain kicked in and she said "Where's the blood? Faces bleed so much there should be MORE BLOOD!" Then later John was incinerating goons and she went "I'd love tile like that for the bathroom."

I played back my audition and thought - "This is a really strong example of how *I* would do it. I wouldn't take it back." Your best shot doesn't come from second-guessing yourself into oblivion, it comes from leading with your assets. You can't control who's listening, but you can control that!

Saw a commercial that I auditioned to narrate. When I heard the voice they cast, the temptation is to think "Well *I* could have done that if they just asked!" But the guidance you get is never that specific. Because what's always true is: They don't really know what they want until they hear it.

Yesterday I got the last of my boxes out of the garage and into the house, so that's another milestone in "moving in." Past two weeks have included a lot of hustling for gigs, meeting people, getting to know the area. Can't say I've settled into a rhythm yet but we're making progress. Onward!

Five days of driving, innumerable adventures, and 2,000 miles later, I'm at my new home with my partner and her cat. Definitely not my cat or our cat, but rather the cat who is allowing me to hang.

Last night I had my last sleep in Huntington Beach for this chapter of my life. While we don't hit the road until Tuesday, until then Claire and I will stay in a hotel closer to our farewell plans. And yesterday I watched most of my worldly goods depart for their own cross-country journey.

Deep cut 1960's kaiju movie "The X From Outer Space" opens with a hilariously absurd briefing for its Mars-bound crew. The mission director says "So, every previous mission to Mars failed, we don't know why, and we lost all our best astronauts. They're floating in space forever....GOOD LUCK B-TEAM!"

I played "The Immortal" on Genesis, one of the cruelest games ever made that could actually be beaten if you gritted your teeth and grinded hard enough. If you didn't move off the starting square within a few seconds, you'd be chewed up and swallowed by a giant worm. It got worse from there.

I remember coding simple 16-color art of some story beats, including a cool 1950's fella you can meet on your travels. Alas, the adventure did not last long and I was pretty generous about not offing the player too easily. I would have picked the dinos.

The stuff I'm finding as I review all my worldly possessions to load up for this move. This is Izzy the Whatsit, the much-mocked mascot for the 1996 Olympic Games. Clearly he should be brought into the Sonic franchise where he can finally experience love.

He Pied Piper-ed a lot of people like me into pursuing acting. He was somehow always mugging but never mugging. It was acting as performance, not something to get puffed-up about but to throw yourself into with 100% commitment and 100% joy. He loved to do it and that love pulled us into his wake.

Does it feel like we're losing all our best weirdos? Like there's no chance they could ever be replaced? It's true, there will never be anybody like them. But remember, that's the essence of what they celebrated. That there will never be anybody else like YOU. So get weird. The world needs it.

Tim Curry was one of the people who most made me want to be an actor. Specifically in "Clue." To see all the craft and technique you expect from elite English stage performers put to the purpose of such virtuoso ridiculousness...it felt like power. Power I wanted to make people laugh with. R.I.P.

Looking back on some pictures I took during many trips to Chicago over the years. This impulse snap taken in the subway turned out great. And now here I am on the brink of being a resident. I've loved the city for so long, guess I'm going to find out if it loves me back.

There’s an aggressively paid for influence op going on right now to defend AI slop as art and protected speech across platforms. AI execs realize they have a problem and don’t wanna get Marie Antoinette’d. The free ChatGPT trip is the tip of the iceberg. First person to nail it down gets a Pulitzer.

Since I expressed a concern about the new "Ted Lasso" I'll give a thumbs-up: I like that when Rebecca shoved Ted he went flying like she has Earth-bender power. Which...she might.
