I worked for Donald Rumsfeld when he was SecDef (not directly, thank God), and I had to step carefully to avoid getting any of his (or Wolfowitz’) crazy on me. We were also given specific guidance on vocabulary and animations for briefings to President Bush. I thought I suffered then. Holy crap!

When learning high-level negotiation strategies under the tutelage of senior officials in the DoD and State Department, nobody offered up blowing our counterparts to smithereens when we didn’t like how they were negotiating. Negotiations with North Korea would have been far more interesting!

I had to shepherd several congressional delegations in Afghanistan. One dolt asked to see “Special Forces in combat.” I told the guy’s military planner that A. We don’t schedule that, and B. If he wanted to be shot at we could work it in – would he like to know in advance or should it be a surprise?
