Photos and notes on storm context or damage Even reports of no hail observed are useful for validation and improving spatial accuracy. E.g., when you are measuring across a hail swath, feel free to submit a report to note that no more hail is observed.

We’re especially interested in accurate measurements, not estimates. When possible, please report: Maximum dimension (Z) — the largest distance across the hailstone X and Y dimensions — measured perpendicular to each other Weight (grams) — optional but extremely valuable.

Hail yeah! The ICECHIP field campaign (@nsficechip.bsky.social‬) has wrapped up, and the collected hailstones are being housed in the NSF NCAR Cold Lab for further study! 🌨️🔬 The project involved chasing storms from Montana to Texas to better understand the conditions that produce hail/hailstorms.

Today will be our “last dance” (officially) with severe hailstorms in North Dakota for the #ICECHIP effort. History was made as we collected, measured, and crushed over 10,000 hailstones across ~20 days. We are excited for the dataset that will be analyzed for many years to come!
