Release: NSEA and our Clark County affiliates welcome requested action on school funding crisis “When educators saw cuts threatening our schools, we told state leaders to figure out a way, and they did. Educators spoke up, and state leaders listened. Our schools and students are better for it.”

"And Nevadans are skeptical. According to Emerson College Polling, a majority of Nevada voters oppose data centers being built in or near their communities. Attaching school funding and promising revenue doesn’t suddenly make their concerns about water, energy, noise and quality of life disappear."

If Gov. Lombardo would like to take a break from giving data centers tax abatements, he could address the school funding crisis caused by his $2 increase in per-pupil funding and use all available mechanisms, including some of the $650M Education Stabilization Account, to provide temporary funding.

Yes, Gov. Lombardo, we agree. Your administration has done a very poor job in education over the years! You vetoed universal school meals, lower class sizes, and after years of chronic underfunding, you increased per pupil funding by just $2 per student causing districts to cut staff and services.

Funding for our public schools and students should not depend on Nevada building more data centers. The good news is that lawmakers already have the Commission on School Funding's plan to sustainably fund our schools, and it doesn't make funding dependent on building more unpopular data centers.

Nevada’s property tax system allows depreciation to continue even after a property is sold. The Commission on School Funding recommends resetting depreciation at the point of sale, generating significant new revenue for Nevada’s public schools. We already have the roadmap. Seriously, Pass the Plan.

Let's be clear: today's proposal from an organization backing Joe Lombardo for Governor is not a school-funding plan. It's a data center growth plan that uses students and teachers to make it more politically attractive. Just another gimmick to help the wealthy keep their tax abatements.

Nevada State Education Association @nsea.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Dedicating some revenue to public education doesn’t make bad policy good policy. This is a pro-data center policy with some education funding attached to make a deeply unpopular industry easier to sell.

Instead of searching for the next stadium, studio, or server to pay for public education, state leaders should repeal the data center tax giveaways, make large corporations pay their fair share, and follow the roadmap Nevada already has from the Commission on School Funding.

Notwithstanding that it’s very unclear what “abated revenue” even means, Joe Lombardo’s new plan to fund our public schools is data centers? Nevadans are worried about what data centers will do to our water and electricity bills, and Lombardo’s answer is to make our schools dependent on them too.
