Back in 2012 Forbes worked out that Smaug's hoard would be worth about $62 billion, or about $90B in today's dollars. abcnews.com/blogs/busine... My boss observed that that doesn't even crack the top 10 list of billionaires today So I think we should start giving billionaires' wealth in Smaugs

I got quite stressed just reading this. I live in a walkable part of my city, but it's not bikeable unless you don't fear the Reaper. We do have some lovely bike paths nearby... that we can only get to by crossing a few murder roads. I don't bike anymore.

As of today, LLMs aren't the right tool to automate toil. Asking an LLM to check data for me = hallucinations and errors = more toil for me. Writing ten SQL queries to check the same data = boom, done. Scripting has done more net toil-reducing for me than LLMs

Yep, this is literally Dr Blaylock's argument in "The Deadly Impossibility Of Herd Immunity Through Vaccination" (2012) I gather that, as a neurosurgeon, he wasn't aware that the ED preventatively vaccinates people who present with a tetanus-potential wound, & has been doing so for my entire life
Without the mantra of herd immunity, these public-health officials would not be able to justify forced mass
vaccinations. I usually give the physicians who question my statement that herd immunity is a myth a simple example.
When I was a medical student almost 40 years ago, it was taught that the tetanus vaccine would last a lifetime. Then
30 years after it had been mandated, we discovered that its protection lasted no more than 10 years. Then, I ask my
doubting physician if he or she has ever seen a case of tetanus? Most have not. I then tell them to look at the yearly
data on tetanus infections – one sees no rise in tetanus cases. The same can be said for measles, mumps, and other
childhood infections. It was, and still is, all a myth.

Peer Review "At its core, peer review faces an unsolved tension: Science advances by embracing uncertainty, yet institutions survive by minimizing it." Insightful new work by @rebekkabrandt.bsky.social 🧵
The Gatekeeping Paradox in Modern Science: Why Some Breakthroughs Are Delayed While Conservative, But Often Fragile Science Is Amplified

Rebekka Brandt Abstract 2026-01-29

Peer review is widely regarded as the cornerstone of scientific quality control, yet it is not immune to failure. This paper examines historical and contemporary instances of peer-review failures and scientific gatekeeping, highlighting how innovative ideas and disruptive discoveries have sometimes been delayed or suppressed. Using examples such as the continental drift controversy and the delayed recognition of dark energy discovery, the study illustrates how peer-review bias, peer-review flaws, and scientific elitism can obstruct the acceptance of valid research. Additionally, the analysis considers how the structural and cultural mechanisms within academia can lead to an innovation block in science, reinforcing established paradigms while discouraging unconventional approaches. By exploring both historical and modern cases, this paper emphasizes the persistent tension between maintaining methodological rigor and fostering scientific progress. The findings underscore the importance of critically evaluating peer review practices and institutional norms to ensure that transformative research is recognized and supported in a timely manner.

For me, social interaction uses the same brain-meats as thinking and basic communication. When my brain is busy trying to read social cues in a new sitch &/or with new people, sometimes I'm not going to have anything to say. Conversation is not getting generated, the brain is too busy
