#OTD 22nd August 1944, my great uncle, Wilfred James Hall, from Cwmbran, South Wales, wrote his last letter to his brother, Thomas (my grandfather), who was with No.1 Army Commando out in India/Ceylon/Burma, whilst Wilfred's unit were on a "well needed day for maintenance", after the 53rd Regt..

OTD 22nd May 1940, my grandfather was wounded (GSW Thigh) at Bodø airfield by a German aircraft attacking their Coy HQ, whilst with the original (No.2) #IndependentCompany Was taken to the local hospital, then evacuated back to Scapa Flow, early June, then onto Meanskirk Hosp, Glasgow. 🫡

#OTD 10th May 1940, my grandfather embarked on MV Royal Ulsterman, at Leith (travelling from Ballykinler on the 8th), after volunteering for the newly raised Independent Companies ready to sail from the Forth of Firth, across the North Sea to Bodø, in Norway, to fight the Germans. #Respect 🫡

Massive good luck to everybody taking part in the @LondonMarathon today. Luckily done 2 (2011/2015), going for the hattrick in '19, but several serious med diagnosis' stopped that, worse luck. If u have the chance, go for it, what absolute amazing experience, miss those times. 👍🏃‍♂️😉👏

#OTD 25th Apr 1940, No.2 Independent Company was raised & assembled in Ballykinler, N Ireland, where my grandfather, Pte Thomas Hall, was to volunteer for, from his parent unit, No.2 Monmouthshire Regt., that saw service in Norway & his eventual pathway to the ARMY Commandos, that summer. 🫡

#OTD 17th Apr 1945, a mates great uncle, Harry Langford Bell, of the 2nd Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, was to be awarded a DCM for his brave actions on that day near Argenta, Italy. Believe it was originally put forward for a higher award, pls read his citation, amazing bravery. 🫡 #Respect

Been lucky enough to commission an artwork by Wisdom Art Prints about great uncle John Appleby's involvement on the special mission, Operation Wildhorn lll, it's of the aircraft they were on, KG477, that flew from their base in Italy, to a beetfield in Poland, late July'44. Really pleased with it.

Can't believe it's been 2 years since dad passed away. I'm still in shock of him not being here, saw/spoke to him virtually every day, walking to the shop, going up the bookies, coming around the house for a cuppa, chat & watch some sport. We are all missing you, dad. Love you. ❤️🏇😓

#OTD 1944, Robert W Pocklington, a PFC from a Special Pioneer Platoon Troop, 2nd Batt. 110th Infantry Regt., 28th Div, was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism during the Battle of the Bulge. Here he is on the right, with a Hank Schrijver, who I both met on a Normandy tour in '89.

#OTD 26th Nov 1943. The HMT Rohna Disaster. My grandfather was to witness it en route to Burma in KMF.26. It was sunk by a Hs293 radio controlled glide bomb from a He177A aircraft. It was to be the biggest single loss of US servicemen action to that date&was covered up during the war & many decades.

#OTD 1945, my great uncle, George Henry Hall, was liberated from his POW camp in Thailand. He spent over 3 & 1/2 yrs in cruel captivity & was forced to work on the Death Railway via a few camps,inc Changi, to start with. He was repatriated not long afterwards. Poor sod. #FEPOW 🌺

Remembering family on #VJDay80, who were in the Far East, inc my Army Commando grandfather, a great uncle in the SWB's, one in the RAF, plus one as a #FEPOW at the fall of Singapore. With the dropping of the bombs, it cut short their suffering & most probs saved their lives. #VJDay 🫡🌺

#OTD 15th Feb 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese & my great uncle was one of the many thousands captured. He was to spend over 3 & half yrs in cruel captivity & treatment, at Changi first, then transported north to work on the Death Railway via another 4 camps. Poor sods. 😥🙏
