it's just a me problem really I just hate anime, as a medium, now, and don't trust any anime studio with explicit content now, is the issue. I even couldn't handle more than an episode of the Apothecary Diaries anime, a manga I basically devoured ten volumes of in a single week

With AAA gaming in a spiral, the "cinematic adventure game" is one of the last remaining pillars of big-budget hits But these games miss everything great about gaming AND the films they cosplay. Games Will Never Be Movies premieres now. #videoessay youtu.be/xvY-NP3pho4

Mercer has continued to take an admirable number of projects that were likely well beneath his pay grade at his level of nerd fame (Trails in the Sky?? Sonic Cross Worlds???) but I imagine the Atlus dub budget is three bucks and a dream

I think it's even simpler and literally just money. they're not all heavy hitters but three of the main cast are two core Critical Roles and Literally Spider-Man, those three alone are going to be big checks

I’m in nearly the same boat for sure, and I even think Pirate Yakuza was mostly mid. I think it’s just an educational moment in how the games we dream of are always better than the ones that release

It’s so tragic now to have seen people go “RGG Studio has lost their touch… what I’ve really been looking for is Gang of Dragon!!” when RGG Studio have made at least 5 new games in the time it’s taken Nagoshi Studio to release one trailer, spend $44 million, and implode

I'm not as salty about this as it's going to read, but apparently the way to get to Fanfest is not "start the XIV cosplay meetup culture on the east coast, play since 1.0, and meet the devs" and is instead "get really lucky or know a half-dozen popular cosplayers"

this is becoming an extremely gross discourse cycle where well-intentioned people are jumping at shadows, and in the process get so deep in dreamscaping reflexive discourse that they themselves start saying gross shit

tl;dr I have felt this instinct before of "not like popular thing = popular thing bad = good that I don't like popular thing" and I have a really great education in justifying it to myself, but it's actually a very self-centered instinct and not great analysis

Not hate to the piece/writer but I don't think the writer is clear on what a skinner box is and the "why would someone like this" bit is weak. "Why would someone like this? Is it just the gunplay, tense encounters, lore, and vibes?" I mean, yes? Those are appealing elements of a Good Video Game?

This is a really well assembled piece with a really well put perspective I've had on hits I didn't click with before in service of the Critical Instinct - one I have absolutely myself had before - to express that not liking something means it has bad elements, and not liking that is thus a virtue.

This immediately explains why Marathon’s intentionally complex UI has been such an early sticking point, and why the many words that very much do explain everything are being ignored in favor of suggestions that they “make the images communicate things better”
