Definition of a strong marriage… Monica: What are you working on today? Me: I’m animating myself as a zombie. Monica: Oh, that’s cool.

Please watch and share my new pilot called Deathahedron! It took me a year to make it, it's made almost entirely with little models that I made and shot in my backyard. I had to make the costumes, hand animate the effects, it's a labor of love! V----CLICK HERE----V www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FNC...

I think we need to celebrate the death of Sora a bit more. This is a technology that, just MONTHS AGO, we were being told was going to literally destroy Hollywood and Disney was going to give them a BILLION DOLLARS and NONE OF THAT EVEN REMOTELY HAPPENED

Doing a rewrite on a script today (and for the last week+) and it’s been really - REALLY - fun. Creative fulfillment was a struggle for decades, TBH, because there’s a HUUUUGE difference between creating someone else’s thing for a company vs creating something you want to exist.

Finally got a chance to set up my new podcast studio for the first time. About halfway to where I can start testing.

When A Few Good Men came out, I read how Reiner questioned every line and word as he developed the script with Aaron Sorkin - a commitment to truth and the heart of storytelling that I have thought of on every project I’ve done. Reiner was is a giant. He will be missed and forever appreciated. 5/5

When we made The Angry Birds Movie, I was so stoked that our editor Kent Beyda’s first film was Spinal Tap. I’ve taken a picture at the “I’ll have what she’s having” table in Katz’s Deli in NYC, and just last week I looked at When Harry Met Sally in preparation for a meeting about a rom-com. 4/5

I saw The Princess Bride in theaters, then countless times on VHS. The number of times my dad quoted “Would anybody like a Peanut?” was inconceivable. I’ve pitched movies with “It’s a combination of Princess Bride and…” When I want my wife to know I would do anything for her, it’s “As you wish.” 3/5

I can still viscerally remember wincing along with a theater full of strangers as Kathy Bates took a sledgehammer to James Caan’s ankle. 2/5

I feel I can somehow, for myself, soften the blow of Rob Reiner’s death by reflecting on how impactful his work was in my life, specifically through the films he directed throughout my Jr. High and High School years. Stand By Me showed me what real friendship could be. 1/5

What a nice reminder. Thanks @david-william4.bsky.social! & here I was going through the day with zero awareness that today’s the anniversary of A Christmas Story Christmas! To commemorate, here’s a photo from right before filming the first shot and another of the last shot before we wrapped.

My take pt. 2: In this streaming reality, if it takes ads to make profits, and profits allow for more movies to be made, it’s a trade I’m willing to make, because making more movies is better than what’s happening now. (I hate all of this, but it’s sadly where we are and where we are heading.) /END

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

My take pt. 1: Covid and shorter theatrical-to-streamer release windows broke the moviegoing habit (I hate that, but it’s true). Now, people simply prefer streaming at home. /8

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

Ironically, streaming is going to turn into the old ad-supported broadcast/cable tv model because it worked. Those made a shit-ton of money because they had the audience. Now advertisers want to reach the massive streaming audiences. /7

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

After years of battling uninterrupted binging, Netflix made people ad-averse, but over time, especially with the popularity of YouTube, people are gradual becoming ad-tolerant again. (Interestingly, the one kind of ad people don’t mind is on sports.) /6

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

That’s why Disney+ is now bundling with Hulu and ESPN, so they can sell/push ads through the same portal at once. Netflix has an ad-supported tier. Amazon Prime has ads. Because they make more money from advertisers than from subscribers alone. Expect a lot more ads in all of our futures. /5

They’ve realized that to make money in our new streaming reality, they need the big revenue that only comes from ads. /4

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

The most profitable model out there by far is YouTube, because… eyes and ads. The second most profitable is Hulu, because, again… ads. /3

Now Go Make A Movie! @nowgomakeamovie.com · 19/10/2025

They said everyone put everything into streaming to chase Netflix’s success, but they’ve all realized there’s no money in streaming – it’s a break-even business. They can only make so much content for the money they’re getting back from streaming. /2

By chance, I was in a store and met a Disney exec, so I took the opportunity to ask them why doesn’t Hollywood want to make movies anymore? Their answer cracked my brain a little, but I am not so perplexed anymore. Hope this helps you too…🧵 /1

I’ll be at Lighbox Expo this Friday, speaking on a panel at 3:30 - Adapting Games into Animated Series and Films - with my Angry Birds directing partner Fergal Reilly @f3rgal.bsky.social. Hope to see some familiar and new faces there!

Adapting Games into Animated Series and Films

Civic Auditorium | Maureen Fan, FERGAL REILLY, Patrick Osborne, Clay Kaytis, Jony Chandra, Katherine MacDonald
Recent animated game adaptations have crushed it with fans like Arcane or at the box office with Sonic. Making them is hard though: these games have rabid existing fanbases much larger than comics, the games are still ongoing, some have thin story, and Hollywood + games have had a storied history with many previously failed film adaptations. Hear from the creatives, who adapt these beloved IP into animation, share how they do it well.

“7 little hand-drawn animated shots - how hard can it be?” This is the first - and maybe the last - time I do cleanup, color, and tones (shadows) on my own animation. I’m really enjoying it, but it’s taking FOREVER! Doesn’t help to have three characters, either. (It’s for an upcoming YouTube video.)
