Teach Regrouping with CRA: Place Value Disks and Wipebooks
Understanding place values in multi-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, rather than relying solely on memorization is crucial to young learners. The CRA (Concrete-Representational-Abstract) model helps students build capacity and understanding. See a video that demonstrates using physical place value disks and expanded form to enhance students' learning and visualization of mathematical concepts.

Scaffolding MathReps
A classroom recently highlighted effective math instruction in a fifth-grade setting, where a yellow place value chart aided student learning in decimal concepts. Students demonstrated self-advocacy and increased confidence as they utilized the scaffold, fostering independence over time. The teacher's approach supported varied learning needs and tracked progress effectively.

Why does this school year feel like walking on quicksand? 6 weeks into the school year, the collective fatigue among educators is real. It’s not one thing, it’s a multitude of competing priorities. Give yourself some grace today. You are not alone! #TeacherImpact #NowaTechie

Why Does This School Year Feel Harder Than Ever? (And Why You’re Not Alone)
We are only six weeks into the school year, but if you talk to teachers in the staff room, in the hallways, or during trainings, a single overwhelming theme emerges: everyone is stressed and exhausted. It doesn't feel like the typical "start-of-the-year chaos" that usually settles down by mid-September. Instead, it feels like we are walking on quicksand or trying to stand on a moving plate of jello. There doesn't seem to be solid ground anywhere. If you are feeling overwhelmed right now, I want to say this clearly right up front: …

The Lasting Impressions We Leave
Living and working in the same community for decades (yikes! Has it really been decades?) is an interesting experience. When you stay in one school district for as long as I have, "interesting" can quickly turn into "wild," the good kind of wild. Over the years, I’ve taught hundreds of students. As time has marched on, I’ve started seeing second-generation learners, teaching the children of former students. Now, in my role as an instructional coach, I get to experience one of the rare, incredible highlights of a long career: coaching/teaching alongside former students who are now district teachers themselves.

After years of relying on inadequate supplementary math programs, our district is piloting two new curricula: Innovamat Thinking Math and Savvas enVision Math. Innovamat emphasizes a spiraled design and student discourse, aiming for deep understanding. Savvas enVision offers a more traditional structure with topical units. Both approaches will be evaluated to improve student learning.

Odd analogy, I know. But hear me out. creative commons licensed ( BY ) flickr photo shared by Evelyn Saenz Today the (grade) 3-5 teachers in my district met to look at available Math Curricula to adopt. We looked at 5 or 6 to begin with and narrowed it down to 2. We used the Math Toolkit (CCSS) in order to narrow our selection down. We focused on some of the basics - quality over bells and whistles. We were then left with 2 programs. Neither one was all that great.

When Technology Entered the Classroom, What Did We Lose Along the Way?
The integration of technology in classrooms initially aimed to foster innovation and equity; however, it often resulted in a reliance on consumption-based tools that hindered critical skills. Educators faced challenges due to inadequate training and support. For progress, a BALANCE is needed that prioritizes pedagogy and encourages thoughtful technology use in education. Celebrating Creative Teaching Techniques in Classrooms
As an instructional coach, I appreciate visiting various elementary sites in my district, where each teacher showcases unique, innovative practices that foster community and connection among students. Examples include a Joke of the Day chalkboard and emoji writing for self-expression. It's the small, thoughtful actions that truly enhance teaching and learning experiences. Sharing these ideas promotes growth and benefits students. What brings you joy in your classroom?
