But it feels so much slower than just smashing blocks together. Especially when you're trying to blockout.

There are merits to Halo's BSP system and doing things in Blender or 3DS. Not having to worry about a grid is neat. You can build things at angles without having to worry you're going to anger God.

Going from Half-Life 2 dev to Halo 2 dev is like when you lose all of your shit halfway through a game

Checkpoint for Half-Life 2 (Ep2) I released it just over a week ago. Learned a LOT about advanced scripting, 3D asset creation and how difficult making something that allows for emergent gameplay can be. It really should have been a mod, ideally on Mapbase so I could've used Vscripts. #leveldesign

Brief update on what I've been up to. Started and completed a Half-Life 2 map that gives a player a goal and allows them to figure out on their own how to accomplish it. The idea was for something along the lines of Dishonored/general imsim, but achieving that sort of breadth isn't easy.

Update: Didn't. But I will be posting more here now on stuff I'm working on.

Working on my game and it currently feels like Anamorphic Art in how the illusion collapses if you move even a little from the intended vantage point.

After dwelling on it for a bit I'm deciding to start a proper blog. It should have been obvious to me from the beginning, but trying to write long-form about things over a bunch of posts in a thread isn't very fun. Will still post here, but when I have a bunch to say I'll just post a link.

If anyone hasn't tried it yet the Nightdive episodes are worth it, and mods like Arcane Dimensions lift it to new heights. The original is an interesting showcase of cutting edge 1996 PC graphics but not much else.

Playing Quake 1 makes me long for what might have been. It's just a worse Doom, bunny hopping does not make a game good. The original concept was so much more interesting than what we got.

The city is under attack, and it's time to drive the invaders from the White Tower. God bless the Wardens, they try their best. Their effectiveness ranges from poorly built Daggerfall character to poorly built Daggerfall character but with a higher luck stat.

You end up back in the White Tower afterwards, apparently it took 3 months to get back. A working mirror is present, allowing us to get a look at our character in-game. Surprisingly a common flex in that era. Mirrors in games have only gotten worse.

Some more WoT posting before bed, this time with pictures! The City of the dead looking appropriately dour, the final level had an interesting premise of "survive until dawn" while helping allied NPCs fight. The mages are immensely more effective than the wardens.

That's all I really have to say for now, I might write more going forward. Overall I've been having a good time after coming from "Requiem - Avenging Angel" which I dropped because it was a n n o y i n g.

Alongside the offensive relics I've also so far found personal physical and spiritual shields, decoys, water breathing wards, and ones that let you teleport through space and swap places with NPCs. The latter of these seem to be used for puzzles, so I'm looking forward to seeing more.

The gameplay is decent so far. The weapons have been interesting, a mix of dumb and homing projectiles with different properties. Enemies will try to move out of the way of your projectile attacks, which means you have to consider when you fire relics with slow moving projectiles.

-a little bit of lore alongside your goals, which are also summarised underneath the text. I'm a few levels in right now, having chased a bad guy and his bestial minions into the cursed ruins of an ancient city. I love cursed ruins and ancient cities, one of my favourite foods.

-which surprised me considering it's a fantasy FPS game from the late 90's. I don't know if Elayna is a character outside of the games, but it's clear that the developers respect her. She narrates the introductory text at the beginning of each level, written from her PoV. It does a good job giving-

So far the game itself has been pretty impressive. The last two years of the 90's were sweet spots for first person games that hadn't quite shed the mechanics of their predecessors, but were far more interested in attempting to tell stories. Your character is fully voiced, and fully dressed-

-The Dark One, an attack which devastated her Sisterhood, has to chase him down and retrieve the artefact he stole. Elayna is only capable of the bare minimum when it comes to magecraft (magecraft is kind of underselling it,it's a whole thing), and must use artefacts as weapons to compensate.

The start-up cutscene did a decent job of giving the short version of what you need to know as someone completely blind to the universe. You play as a woman named Elayna, a member of a sisterhood of powerful mages (I can't remember the actual name) who after an attack by a man who worships-

Picked up "The Wheel of Time", the 1999 PC game from GOG's summer sale. I've never read the books or seen any other derivative works, so it's my first time being exposed to the universe. The normal fiddling was needed to get things in a state I was happy with, using Piexoto's patch + ini edits.
