Kings & Queens (& Joan of Arc). Last night, our cofounder Scott Tilton was crowned King of the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc. Each year, Twelfth Night (January 6) marks the beginning of Mardi Gras season and the Krewe of Jeanne d’Arc opens the season in style with a sumptuous parade in the Vieux Carré.

We had the honor to conduct research at the Library of Congress for our Musique(s) project. With the support of the American Folklife Center, we went through numerous archives, including amazing recordings conducted by John Lomax in the 1930s. See y’all this spring for the release of Musique(s).

We have a lot to give thanks for here at Nous, including to the amazingly talented Chasah & Charliese West, our 2023 Le Lab laureates. We co-produced Héritage, in English & Louisiana Creole, last year, and it was recently featured at the Festival International du Film Panafricain de Cannes. Bravo !

Louisiana French and Creole have been spoken for over 300 years. Connecting to our region’s shared history, culture, and addressing its present challenges requires a concerted reinvestment in transmitting these languages for a new generation. Here’s an overview of why it’s important:

The French Quarter's 'Little Red Schoolhouse' could soon reopen to students
After the Homer Plessy Community School moved out of the "Little Red Schoolhouse," the French Quarter was left without a school for the first time since 1860. That could soon change.

In the early 1800s, the Café des Éxilés (Exiles’ cafe) in New Orleans brought together émigrés from France and the Caribbean who met for coffee and gossip. Happy to keep that tradition alive on 🦋 with fellow former #nolatwitter. Photo: Louisiana Anthology
