A bearded glassed wearing man sitting at a wooden table typing on a computer. The table is in the doorway of Tempo Rubato, and there is a green leafy vine creeping up the wall on the right of the photo. On the left, in the reflection on the glass door you can see more greenery. On the desk next to the man's laptop you can see some notebooks and pens for sale. Behind the man is a pull up banner which has "NO TYPEWRITERS / NO TALKING" on it.

We took over MPavilion on Tuesday night. Writers were writing in the golden light of a magnificent Melbourne evening in the cozy confines of Tadao Ando's concrete canopy.

Jelena Potpara's poem 'What is a Bat?' is the first piece in Patter. Potpara's cute little poem was inspired by one of her nieces and exudes whimsy and playfulness off the page. It's the perfect way to dive into this eclectic collection of poetry, prose, and non-fiction.

A screen cap of a poem with an illustration of a bat by Jo Waite. This is laid over dark green crinkled paper.

Words say:

What is a bat?
Jelena Potpara

A bat is not a cat
Nor a wombat
It is just that—a bat!
And where does it live?
