pedestrians horses and other cyclists. Also an end to by the minute billing to reduce antisocial use.

Definitely disagree. But I do wonder if a company thet makes money out of hiring bikes for use in public places should insist on a proficiency test prior to use (even a quiz). Also feel they should all have insurance (lime do others not) and presumed liability (none of them) in collisions with

I think that with a lot of bad infrastructure and bad legislation we can make it work by behaving in a kind considerate manner to others (which is actually legislation) The problem is too many just seem unable to even try to do that and even those of us that do try will make mistakes. Hopefully

I am all for replacing H/LGVs with these but as with all other commercial use of the public highway, my belief is they should be strictly regulated. And I also believe they should be excluded from cycling infrastructure unless said infrastructure is more than 3m wide and one way.

to people and property daily. I think the legislators need to look at making the "fake ebikes" the "chips" and dodgy conversion kits illegal to sell rather than relying on police to mop up the mess created by the status quo

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
the humans on board are usually the heaviest part of the equation and normally enough to cause injury to others no matter the weight of the bike The police could do more, but the public (as you say) need far more protection from bigger heavier more dangerous vehicles which cause more damage

to the public. The broader point about improving infrastructure is vital and somehow buried in the e-bikes are dangerous headline People need to be more considerate of others all the time But squeezing bikes into small spaces creates c9nflicts needlessly And while some bikes are big and heavy

license plates, a driving license, helmets and insurance as they are motorbikes in law, not "should technically be classed as motorbikes" (i.e. they are not should be). It would be impossible for almost all of them to get type approval as a motorbike so they are illegal to use on land accessible

Thank you for the considered response Caroline While I have huge sympathy and understanding of the victims statements here it is terrible journalism There is no need for them to argue woth the victims bit they need to point out to the public that "fake e-bikes" already require type approval,

People are generally quite unaware of what's going on around them. Generally its a great idea to look out for wallies and, I would offer, always look both ways before crossing a road. IME pedestrians are the worst "rule breakers" of them all. I was "nearly" knocked over by a couple on Saturday

I feel entitled as a cyclist and as a pedestrian And as a driver. Entitled to be respected and treated with consideration I must be a terrible human, right?

It's 9.3kj for you Maybe my calculation is wrong in terms of the energy in the resulting collision bit i think it is closer than your op.

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Driver is a psychopath basically Also its an easy error but 49 vs 30 will always almost be worse than 20 vs 0 Thinking and deceleration time is one part But kinetic energy is mass x speed ² So approx 63.4kJ at 20mph (3500lbs for the car) and 380.8kj at 49 assume you + bike 230lb then

From a numbers point of view mandatory car helmets would make a far bigger impact on public health as drivers and passengers represent a huge number of annual TBIs and it may put people of driving a percentage of journeys 🤷🏻‍♂️
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Which is why infrastructure to make cycling safer (for cyclists amd pedestrians) will always trump helmet laws in terms of public health measures as it actively encourages more cycling Only once you get there does public policy heavily promoting cyclists start to bear fruit in those terms
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
but a net benefit to public health because of the increased physical activity its of many people. (Also an economic benefit) So its not an argument against helmet use, but against mandating and enforcing that mandate. Obviously those injured may think differently, but public health is about averages
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Not helmet wearing but enforcement of helemt laws There is reasonable evidence that it reduces numbers cycling which is worse for societies collective health (public health) With increased numbers cycling (rather than driving or getting the bus) you get increased cycling related injury

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Hammering for both statements above. Ultimately I am firmly in the personal choice camp, and I personally choose one when possible. But public policy should be related to the things that help the most and only when that is sorted should helmets be heavily pushed (eg in the NL where TBI are

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Honestly it is really hard to argue with A) compulsory helmets laws will do very little for societal health and very likely worsen it overall B) Wearing helemts will likely prove an overall benefit on average to individuals wearing one in a crash. But (if anyone sees this) I am sure I will get a

If people stuck to 20mph en masse then the improvements would be even greater This would need more enforcement with bigger fines and more automatic technology in cars i dare say. We also need to engineer roads to make 20 seem sensible in all urban streets The a205 for example
A screen grab of google maps showing the A205 in Streatham
A 6 lane dual carriageway with a 20mph speed limit and no cycle lanes whatsoever

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Sorry I can't reply The artocle doesnt sugges Londoners are obeying the speed limits and nor does the available (that I have seen) data What seems to be true is that the 20mph limit has slowed traffic significantly in terms of average MOVING speed (not journey average) And this is the result
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
They dont even need to monitor speed in real time, only average journey speeds (pick time to drop off is already in the app) Unless speeding or red light jumping its really hard to alter that much, even ptw vs bicycle. Never mind epac vs unregistered electric motorbike

Very nearly missed a flight in Delhi (London to Bangkok on Air India) because of the 4 ½ time difference.

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
Why a temporary ban? They might be a bit of fun at times but they cause huge harm to individuals and the wider public realm at times too. If we have to have barbecues in public why not do away with disposable ones and build communal public use ones?
020
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Intersting thay they will "allegedly" use the algorithm to stop people having an ebike account when they ride a pushbike, but wont use ot to enforce speed limits, red lights etc due to "privacy concerns"

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
I have had people stare me in the face and still pull out. I would slow right down here and if they didnt move, crawl as slowly as possible past them to demonstrate that if they had waited off the crossing, they would have saved themselves time. Probably pointless as not much thinking going on there

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
About 90% of hire riders are basically pedestrians, 30kg heavier and 13mph faster In the same way we should have more scrutiny and regular retesting to drive, hire bikes should at least test basic competency via the app The former is certainly more pressing than the latter, but the latter easier

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I have been beeped and close passed at 25 in a 20 for having the temerity to leave a cycle lane to over take a fellow cyclist. (And yes Yes of course the expert driver then had to stop within a few hundred yards in a queue of traffic).
150
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
We have had discussions about this before and while I agree with your broader points there is no speed limit at which (some) drivers won't overtake a cyclist I occasionally cycle over 20mph in a 20 and more often than not will be overtaken. See bike, overtake bike.

In the telling of the story the "culprit" put the cup in a bin bag that was already there. Not sure i would have done that personally but also not sure this is littering at all? Out if interest is there any merit in not giving your details here? They have no "right" to them do they?

If tfl cannot create a culture where their drivers understand this, we will keep seeing the horrific numbers of pedestrians and cyclists injured and killed by them. Even if they do make wholesale changes to the infrastructure.
000
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
have waited, bit I would still criticise the driver for pulling over when it is not safe. They should wait for the cyclists to pass. From my experiences above it is not bicycles holding up a bus for 10s when they need to stop that causes delays, it it traffic lights and too many (often parked) cars.
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
why bother when you can just pull over / pull out and signal at the same time, is hugely problematic. Did the cyclists need to pass the driver here - no absolutely not, though it seemed very much that the driver passed them then had to slow and the tiny separated lane then disappeared. I would

outside the bus with infrastructure, as at some point a pedestrian becomes a passenger so has to be able to closely interact. This culture of many that might is right, or that bus drivers feel they can take priority (it must be given, you can't take it) and a lack of mirrror signal maneuvere-
100
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
There will always be risk posed by drivers of buses, which is why seperated infra is so important but the fact that 1 of the ~3 people killed and injured by buses each week is a passenger inside a tfl bus highlights the issues with the culture. It is also impossible to protect pedestrians
100

distances as an irrelevance. There are also far a seeming majority in between who are either ignorant or ambivalent to the danger they pose and who have a total lack of understanding of the highway code and why adhering to it is necessary to keep others safe.

to be beyond the capability of most to control) when passengers have not yet taken a seat. (My favourite is when the automated message reminds people to take a seat when the bus is moving as the driver accelerates hard before allowing time for people to sit) and treating stopping and passing

I have experienced some truly excellent drivers (recently most of these seem to be female) bit also some down right dangerous drivers, ignoring speed limits (the new BYD electric buses are limited but not to 20mph anywhere it seems) dangerously accelerating and braking (the new electric buses seem

Mostly by bicycle and often by train and bus. While I use the same routes most of the time, so lack experience of every bus route in London, I feel it incredibly unlikely my experiences are isolated to those routes and not indicitave of all of London. As a passenger, pedestrian and cyclist

- they lack proper rest breaks, no access to toilets etc and also pressure from bosses to be "on time" This sympathy doesnt extend to me excusing a lot of drivers behavior on the roads. They maintain absolutely responsibility for their own actions imo. I commute to work 100 miles plus per week
110
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
Absolutely I have massive sympathy for the drivers, not only in terms of realising that almost none of the roads infra in London suits vehicles that big mixing with pedestrians cyclists and motorcycles. It must be incredibly hard. But also in terms of really poor working conditions at times
110
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
You are right that bus lanes are not safe cycle infra But bus drivers resolutely do not need to do this There're is literally no excuse for it There is a complete lack of a safe working culture from tfl and its contractors and their employees

Even when there is complete separation the space we give isn't enough for more than one bike. This depicts shared space where there is more than enough room for separation.
110
Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
As i said above(below) every time i see these they are poor My problem with the design depicted - about 1ft between the waiting area and that bus - loads of space in the right turn only lane for cars, if you can get there, which is where I would go on a 20mph road.

Tom Macdonald @nottingtom.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
When drivers are sensible (as you explain/ seem) sharing with motor vehicles is ok. But sense(ible) isn't that common.
