If I found out that Eli Manning has murdered 80 people I’d be like “Wow, what an incomprehensible monster, and also, remember when he ruined the Patriots’ 19-0 season because of an uncalled hold and a circus catch by a guy who would never be heard from again LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.”

Why would the world be better in this state of affairs, i.e., the Supreme Court can strike down state laws but not federal laws? Can the Supreme Court strike down federal regulations? What if the regulations are inconsistent with law? I don't really understand why people hate judicial review.

There is some flim-flam, though, and it seems fairly incremental for many of us. OpenAI's announcement of the Hugging Face attack is *marketing*. It is also *marketing* when they all claim that they're building products that might KILL ALL HUMANS, but geez, no, they just can't stop doing it.

It's a pretty poor argument. The best point made in the article is that if a convention is called, the failure to participate in it would be bad. So, categorical opposition is not the right position to take. Agree with that.

NEW: As AI companies provoke intense scrutiny, former Obama White House official Jay Carney has joined an effort to “rebuild bonds” between Democrats and the AI industry. Dem operatives are joining the AI industry in droves – we’ve tracked over 100 former Biden officials who made similar moves.
Jay Carney’s new job: Rebuild tech’s bridge to Democrats

Jay Carney is heading back to Silicon Valley’s political trenches. Carney, the former Obama press secretary who left Airbnb this summer, has joined SV Angel, Ron Conway’s early-stage venture capital firm, to run a new initiative called Project Blueprint.

Its purpose is to rebuild bonds between leaders in the artificial intelligence sector and Democrats who are demanding new rules to regulate the technology.

In 2000, Karl Rove decided that the best way to win elections, particularly presidential elections, was to move to the right and turn out more and more wingers. This worked in 2004, 2016, and 2020. McCain (2008) and Romney (2012) were not crazed right wingers. In 2020, Trump lost because

I saw this weird guy outside my house yesterday. Never having seen anything like it before, I thought maybe AI could help me figure what it was. So, I put it into copilot, and it tells me it's a luna moth caterpillar. Cool, I think, that's neat, what's a luna moth? 1/
It's a weird looking bug that is primarily a translucent white, but has several red bumps on its head. Its tail appears to have darkly colored organs inside. Its crawling over a wet sidewalk with two fallen leaves, beautifully lit by late summer sun.Same as the other picture from another angle

The thing is, you can read American history and it will explain the aspects of the Bible you need to know. You don't need to read the Bible first. So, this is just kind of dumb.

This is absolutely ridiculous. For all its potential pitfalls, the Ford aircraft carriers are built entirely around the EMALS system, and "replacing" it with steam catapults - which require large amounts of space and personnel - is simply not a realistic option. www.wsj.com/us-news/trum...

National Service Initiative should start with people who are 60+. I didn’t come up with this idea—heard it on a podcast—but it’s a good one. Most calls for service would impose additional burdens on the youth to satisfy the policy goals of old people. Put your money where your mouth is.

By making federal agencies legislative assistants, you remove them from the presidential appointment power as well. If they exist to assist congress, then congress can choose who runs them. This is partially why I'm not too worried about the administrative law decisions like the FTC case.

I hate the way Roberts writes. He is so obviously writing history and philosophy and not law. He is on the right side momentarily but that again emphasizes how much this court is not doing its job, deciding cases now on whim rather than law.

No, jam them with more jurisdiction. Take away cert. Make them hear everything. Literally, 400 cases a year. Automatic right of appeal from any circuit court and any federal question from state supreme courts.

Agree that consequences are needed. When reform comes, Congressional reform has to be first. Congress needs to be larger, gerrymandering banned. There needs to be no filibuster. The Senate needs more "legislative days." Congress needs to manage the executive and prevent abuses. The court is next.

Much rending of garments over independent agencies. It's a big deal because they overturned 90 years of precedent. It is not inherently a problem. The country existed for more than a century before the first independent agency was created. Yes, there are problems--the spoils system wasn't good. 1/n

That’s a bummer. I read his book Empire of Liberty some years ago, and I felt like it explained our politics in a way that other history books hadn’t. But also … I recently looked at the opening chapters of that book, and, frankly, they’re confused and confusing. He didn’t get the history right.

Broadly agree with this, but specifics matter and it’s paywalled. Simply electing the AG, like most states, would go a long way, but how are they elected? General? mid term? Selected by Congress? By the senate? What’s the term? How are they removed? It’s not simple.

Ronan Farrow's New Yorker piece didn't come up with anything damning, but it painted a picture of a man who just tells everyone what they want to hear so long as it advances his interests. I suspect that's fairly common in the start up space. If they boot him now, he still winds up a billionaire.

I barely understand the discourse some days, but it's worth remembering that The Hobbit was a children's story. Like so many other classic stories, Tolkien began by making up stories for his son. Eventually he wrote them down. Whether you show young kids the movies depends on the kid.

While I'm at it, Jack Schlossberg isn't the guy either. His entire candidacy is built on the fact that he's a grandson of John F. Kennedy. If you look at his resume, it's clear that he has never worked a real job in his life. Schlossberg's entire existence is supported by his family. . . .

The only thing we need to end gerrymandering is a federal law that requires state legislatures to draw compact and contiguous districts. You can do it in about 10 words. Then add a private right of action for any citizen who believes the districts to be improperly gerrymandered.
