That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 22h100% this. I remember being in Maplin in Edinburgh around 2002, and one of the staff had a project to fit 20MB of RAM to a BBC Micro. It went into the 1MHz Bus. After 2005 it was all shitty disco balls... 130
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Wow! Botulism toxin is more incredibly toxic than you would believe. Absolutely not something to be brushing off as "ah that's close enough!" 010
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 06/10/2026You had an opportunity to replace, and used that to procure a BEV. It's what I would have done. The average age of a car in the UK, though, is 10 years. So the overwhelming majority of people don't have that opportunity regularly. My PHEV will probably go to BEV when I get to that point. 100
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Well, sure on a longer scale, but they're not going to have replaced their diesel vehicles since March, and they're not going to be able to plug them in either. Right now, everyone is struggling with what they have, unless they were either way ahead on electric cars, or were replacing soon anyway. 110
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Tig around Edinburgh in the 1980s. Not saying that "English" is the issue here, but not ruling it out either... 110
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 04/10/2026My old man used to drive a white Vauxhall Cavalier in the early-mid 1990s. It was honestly surprising how many people slowed down when he had the roof rack fitted... 000
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 03/10/2026No Play Expo for me this year. A little sad about that, but other things and expenses going on. 010
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Didn't you have to hold it up to your head like you were taking on a taco? 000
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 30/09/2026My son fixed my Beeb PSU at the weekend, and had been frustrated with Revs all of this evening. I came in, posted sub-1:30 on my first lap, and left him to it. Worst dad ever! 😄 010
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It's the bit where you run into a wall and then just start crawling up it - it's jaw-dropping!! 020
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 30/09/2026@quaplek.bsky.social - looking forward to some Gaussian Elimination! And yes, when you exploit the AI, you can pull a perfect shot with the Gauss Gun. 020
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Look at it! Why the hell would be want to leave that? It's like Legoland for spaniels! 080
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Good job! Actually, if you only take one agent to the Atlantic Accelerator, you can exploit a bug in the AI. Try it. 5 shields, a Gauss Gun, and a couple of miniguns should work. Ride out the initial attack on shields (don't them run down), wait, wait! Gauss gun the swarm, and you're on your way! 111
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Revs was unbelievable on a Beeb. I could smash that game, but I'm disappointed that the hardware timing is wrong on the MiSTer. Since my B+ is alive, I should maybe sort the floppy drives and fire up some F3. As for Chuckie Egg, I hit it from cold in Blackpool 2 years ago and broke 250000 points!😁 120
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 29/09/2026The youth of today... Here's a proper list! 🙂 Astonished that I haven't put a single flight sim in there, or Apocalypse on the Archimedes, or Hang On, or Ridge Racer... Bloody hell, can I get some more, please? 270
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I saved after each mission. Ram the tax up in each state as you take it, and they're "very happy", and then roll it back so they stay "happy" or "content". Take one agent, but spend the money to it them out as best you can. Atlantic Accelerator is interesting, though. 110
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Syndicate is brilliant. I played through it recently with one agent. American Revolt is a colossal pain in the arse, though!! 210
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 27/09/2026My son has been desperate to get his hands on my old BBC Micro, but I've been acutely aware that the Rifa caps in the power supply will have been rotten. Well, I got a capacitor kit, and he's only gone and replaced them. Damn it starts quickly!! 020
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Earlier this year I read a book, and I was nearly at the end when I realised I'd read it before. Getting older sucks. 030
Reposted by That Other GuyDave Rudden's off to Fantasycon! @daveruddenwrites.bsky.social · 25/09/2026My five year old has the soul of Orson Welles. We were outside school and he 'put a kiss in my pocket for later.' Extremely touched by this, I gave him two back. He dug out the second one, THEATRICALLY CRUSHED IT IN HIS FIST and said 'one is enough.' 573315428

That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 21/09/2026P3 covers you for DOS all the way up to WinXP, and ISA to PCI+AGP. You can shove in a 3DFX and Soundblaster. You can have RS232 serial and 25-pin printer ports, plus USB. Network from 10Mb to 1Gb. You'll not be able to use SATA, though, but it covers a whole lot of bases. Up to 1400MHz too. 011
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Aye. The stock Archimedes couldn't even accept the FPA. I fitted an ARM3 upgrade board which had a socket for the floating point unit. Perhaps the A540 had it - it was super fancy. 000
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Yeah, I'm thinking of an old Pi1, with the 26-bit mode still in it. 100
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Wow - FPA10 floating point accelerator boosted FP performance by a factor of 50! That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 21/09/2026In 1992/93 I rendered the rocket scene from POVRay 1 on an Acorn Archimedes with 25MHz ARM3 CPU. I ran it at 1280x1280, i think, and it took 4 days. That was with no FPU, so everything went through the FPEmulator module. Apparently, the hardware floating point unit was 2-3x faster. 120
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 20/09/2026I remember at the Scottish Hifi Exhibition, decades ago, Tannoy hired out a big hall, put a pair of wardrobe-sized speakers at one end, and filled the space with glorious music. I think they were ~£65000 per pair, when that could have bought a house in Edinburgh, and they looked about that size. 100
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Well, it's also a local issue, rather than a WAN link. (Network guy enters the room, and enters the offside DR 15ms later.) 110

That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 15/09/2026So, 54666 was my record, v90 modem, to Demon Internet. Kinda fitting since all their POPs had numbers ending 666... Anyone want to beat it? 000
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Perhaps it would take less planning permission to fix the relentless leaks of potable water from pipes? Not to say the planning isn't a disgrace, but the problem can be tackled from two sides. 010
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 14/09/2026No problem. Not my first time answering this question! 110
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 14/09/2026If she wins an appeal against any one of them, the others still stand. That's how it's supposed to work. 130

That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Edinburgh council seem to have history with companies running events in the gardens. Remember when it was suddenly chill to fell a whole bunch of trees for the Christmas market? An informed third party suggested to me that the stalls weren't exactly structurally safe that year either... 111

That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I just had to perform emergency patching on a load of network equipment last week due to Buffer Overflow attacks. This is elementary stuff, and it seems to be getting missed too often. My flight on Thursday was delayed by over an hour, and I expect it was simply fallout from this NATS issue. 001
That Other Guy @notthatexciting.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Over 30 years ago I was taught that you check your inputs. You check user inputs. You check file inputs. You check function and procedure inputs. If they don't fall within appropriate parameters, you reject them with an error. Then you handle the error. There is nothing new here. 100
