Klaus-Michael Kühne was a great patron of the arts (and football!) in Hamburg, but very defensive about his company and its history, despite it being widely known that it had brown stains all over it. I suspect his father's role may have led to this refusal to look at the history.

Since the owner's recent death the company are making noises about allowing proper research into their past, not least because the Kühne-Stiftung are financing Hamburg's proposed new opera house. www.ndr.de/kultur/musik...

Somewhere on my shelves is a Penguin called "Bestseller" - alas I have forgotten who wrote it - which covered this topic. It went back to the 1890's, as far as I remember.

Wanted a husband who doesn’t suppose, That all earthly employments one feminine knows— That she’ll scrub, do the cleaning, and cooking, and baking, And plain needlework, hats and caps, and dressmaking… —“Wanted A Husband”, by Marion Bernstein (1846–1906), born #OTD, 16 Sept 🎂🧵 #C19 #poem #poetry
Wanted a Husband
Marion Bernstein

‘Baking and cooking, scrubbing and dressing
Accomplishments grand, well worth possessing;
Economy too, with wisdom discreet,
My wife must practise to make all ends meet.’
—Eleve.

Wanted a husband who doesn’t suppose,
That all earthly employments one feminine knows—
That she’ll scrub, do the cleaning, and cooking, and baking,
And plain needlework, hats and caps, and dressmaking.
Do the family washing, yet always look neat,
Mind the bairns, with a temper unchangeably sweet,
Be a cheerful companion, whenever desired,
And contentedly toil day and night, if required.
Men expecting as much, one may easily see,
But they’re not what is wanted, at least, not by me.

Wanted a husband who’s tender and true,
Who will stick to his duty, and never get ‘fou,’
But when all his day’s work he has blithely gone through,
Help his wife, ‘set to rights,’ till her work is done too;
Who will not absurdly, and helplessly go,
And trouble the wife about ‘buttons to sew,’
On his shirt, or his gloves, or his coat, or his vest,
But will sew them himself, and not think he’s oppressed.
Now, if such a lad you should happen to see,
He’s wanted by many, but yet—not by me!

Good luck with "mission" against a local background like this.
The church of Scotland is disposing of our village church. Despite us indicating our interest in buying it for the community, they have advised that they will sell it to the highest bidder, and the community of Falkland will get no preferential treatment. Many generations have found comfort, hope and community in this building, and we hope this can continue for the future.

I have the old Canmore site numbers and grid references stored in an Excel file (that's another thing that has disappeared, these days you can only download a mapping file) - if it would be useful to any one, I'm quite happy to pass it on.

Peter Kershaw @notthatelderpeter.eurosky.social · 23/08/2026
If you have the old Canmore URL stored as a link that should still work (at least for a while) and since they didn't change the reference numbers you can still work round. But I find the new search function dreadful.

I hope that the Home Office advice is just badly drafted and not a serious attempt to restrict rights - but with the Home Office you never know! Thanks to Amateur Photography for pointing this out.

This goes against current advice to police officers, which is that "Unnecessarily restricting photography, whether for the casual tourist or professional, is unacceptable and it undermines public confidence in the police service".
