Exactly! As someone who has observed very weird backlash to Afropessimism as a *DESCRIPTIVE* theory online (as in, not telling you how to live life or how to get to the "end of the world" in material terms). You are so incredibly right at how that nuance gets washed away for reductive conclusions.

Personal feelings (Raven + OJ) versus a structural analysis (which includes personal experience, like AP and Black studies). Combine that dichotomy with horseshoe theory and you can see how people can come to linguistically similar conclusions/thoughts from largely different reasonings/perspectives.

The Lacanian psychoanalytic conception of jouissance and Sheldon George's jealouissance take up some of that legwork. There is psychic pleasure to be generated from an object cause of desire, or a thing/signifier that appears to have that which you lack. Blackness being the signifier here.

i wanna also add that i think this is why other groups of people, mainly white people, feel this incessant need to appropriate blackness. for black people to possess anything, even culturally, would require the existence of black personhood. that is conceptually dangerous for the white identity.

If you can make time as a Black person, whether you agree with Afropessimism as a (descriptive) theory in totality or not, it helps to discuss the condition of Blackness, especially concurrently w/ communication and psychoanalysis study. Clarifies a lot of the psychic investments of antiBlackness.

The church was the only system for Black musicianship to be trained. It is not an innately good thing that voices were trained under captive/oft nonconsensual/hegemonic systemic spaces. I wish Black people would stop saying this like it's a positive and/or divorced from the ills of the church.
