Spring flowers in the Pacific NW. What’s blooming in my garden this week: Nootka Rose (Rosa nutkana) More my style than other roses: native / no maintenance - plus great for the pollinators & food for birds. #findjoy #artyear #bloomscrolling #PNW #gardening #MayBlooms #spring #flowers #gardens #rose
Light pink petals, yellow stamen with bright orange center. Open flowers lie flat and face upward toward the sun. Blooms from top Al the way to the ground. Each plant is 9 feet high and 5 feet wide.

Who's ready to follow this path wherever it might lead? 🙋🏻‍♀️ You'd be on your way to stunning views at Cape Flattery in Washington state, US, the northwestern point in the lower 48 states. #ForestFriday #PNW

Studies point to redlining as a 'perfect storm' for breast cancer - University at Buffalo
“While redlining was outlawed long ago, that doesn’t mean the pathways it helped establish are gone. ” BUFFALO, N.Y. – In neighborhoods across America, women face a daunting threat from a federal practice that, although it was outlawed decades ago,...

I assume that this probably applies to most of us: Our world is so 💩 & hard right now, that the only thing truly keeping me going, is small, random acts of kindness, community, & support, from individuals. Let’s scale this up, because practicing small acts is achievable by everyone.

We absolutely must stop logging mature forests in Western Washington & the Olympic Peninsula. These are some of the last refuges of our local biodiversity & protect our waters/prevent landslides. Thank you to the protestors working to protect this forest.

besides eco & nurturing biodiversity reasons, my use of a scythe came about by being too poor to hire landscapers & needing a disability accessibility tool to cut things that didn’t hurt my body w/its injuries & vulnerabilities to repetitive stress injuries.
landscape of recently cut grass with a scythe. 4 passes cut made two windrows of cut grass. the grass has been cut & there are two parallel windrows where the cut grass has been raked to dry or mulch. in the foreground on the grass are the two tools: a modern austrian scythe with a lightweight ash wood snath & adjustable handles, & an about 70cm mong long & light steel grass blade attached that is specially forged in austria in a 500 year old factory. it’s crossed, on the ground by a light wooden rake with wide wooden teeth for raking cut grass. in the background is a green metal rolling cart holding the few tools you need in the field with the scythe—whetstones/holders— +snips, water for me & the whetstones, & a bucket needed while in the field

1. As we face a series of great crises, every parent is confronted with the question of how much we tell our children. We don’t want to lie to them, but nor do we want to terrify them. Of course, there is no single answer. It depends in part on the child. But this thread suggests one approach. 🧵

I ❤️ my old lady bicycle. She’s named, “Tilly.” Time to give Tilly some spring TLC this week so I can pedal to the nettle patch & see if the nettles are coming up. My guess is they are & it’s time for Nässelsoppa! (that’s swedish for nettle soup 💚🌱) 1st super nourishing greens of early spring.
Black, step-through frame bicycle that looks like a hybrid between a cruiser & trail bike, with an extra large comfy seat, detachable wire basket on the back, mirrors & reflector lights, parked indoors in a living room, on an old hardwood floor

I haven't done this in a long time, by I'm going to write a thread tonight. Today we had some high energy wind, as a sharp transition between atmospheric energy levels moved into our region. High energy winds can move large masses. That's what energy does, move matter. Today it moved some of mine.
Red steel pole barn upside down leaning against a tree and a chicken house. Barn professionally built to accepted standards summer before last.
Accepted standards don't work anymore. More energy.Red steel pole barn upside down leaning against a tree and a chicken house. Barn professionally built to accepted standards summer before last.
Accepted standards don't work anymore. More energy.
The buggies it was protecting are visible in this shot. None were damaged.

12. There was a time when the living ecosystem harvested and made use of virtually all the energy that fell from the sun. The fact that we've killed most of them doesn't mean we can have their energy for free. We can't.

We’re lucky in the US to have so much clean drinking water that we flush our toilets with it. But imagine turn on your tap and not knowing if the water is safe to drink. With Trump gutting all the environmental rules, that will be our future.

advocating for the spouse in the nursing home is chaotic & exhausting. also traumatic, for all the basics I need to “fight” for them to do. I had plans to take care of me today incl going to pharmacy. exhausted already, nothing on my list for me done. Best I can do now is 🌱smoothie, bath, collapse.

few years ago, high up the Sol Duc River, close to the hot springs, I saw two of the largest salmon in a river I’ve *ever seen,* spawning. We watched from afar for a bit, then so moved by awe, felt we should quietly retreat, as if we had a glimpse of the gods & shouldn’t stay might we disturb them.

1. You feel powerless? Don’t know what you can do to resist the rise of fascism? Here is an answer: Good Things. Fascism inflicts pain and harm as a matter of doctrine. Kindness, care and conviviality defend us from it. The more we build community, the less it can take root. 🧵

Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay... small acts of kindness and love. - Gandalf
