Just a reminder: No matter the fandom, if you sort by Kudos on AO3 and only read the most popular fics, you're going to miss a LOT of amazing fanworks, including the ones still being actively updated. Especially for older fandoms that may be less active now.

slowly learning that fandom is only enjoyable in the privacy of a group chat limited to friends you’re completely comfortable disagreeing with without a fight

Do you think John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker ever called each other up to talk about how feral fans got when it was revealed they got cast in SW and DW? Like "these people are fucking nuts, mate" "TELL ME ABOUT IT"

Well, ultimately both. But the first one makes so much sense without having seen it!

I think the key is to treat the internal barriers as equally valid and important to the plot as external ones, which a lot of people... don't know to do, because our culture doesn't think of mental/emotional hangups as "serious" compared to external Plot Factors.

You have to have something that is believably preventing the leads from getting together, AND you have to have an equally plausible solution to that problem. The more believable the obstacle, the slower the burn can be, BUT the reader needs hope that the problem isn't totally insurmountable!

I think the key part to a good slowburn fic is not necessarily the yearning (which all shippy fic has in different amounts, it just depends on how fast that desire is fulfilled), but the tension btw the yearning & whatever obstacle is in the way AND how effective the removal of that obstacle is.

Instantly explains why there aren’t many slow burns for my ships, and probably why my understanding of slow burns is very much in progress 😅

Sorry to tell u this but "shipping" just means "I enjoy thinking about them interacting in a non-platonic non-familial way" That's it! There's no implied associated "condoning" or "wanting it to be real"! You can ship them and also think "THAT WOULD BE FUCKED UP" (very common actually)

That’s the trap of capitalism. When you tell someone you’re a writer or author they ask if you’ve published and judge your success on how many books you’ve sold. Your crafting (knit, crochet, etc) is just a “hobbie” until you sell it on Etsy. Then you’re a small business owner.

Plenty of marginalized people directly affected by fascism write and read about characters and romantic dynamics like this as a way to process our own complex and tumultuous experiences of trying to find love and partnership while living under oppression.

Sabrina is just like me fr

Sabrina Carpenter performing at the 2024 VMAs.
She wears a little spangled white leotard with a red sequin kiss mark on the buttcheek, and sits on a set that looks like an alien rock planet.
She is watching a fully suited up astronaut kneel at the feet of a sexy blue alien lady with a full freaky alien head, as he simulates cunnilingus on her.

Sabrina is labeled "Me"
The alien and astronaut couple are labeled "the explicit fanfic I'm reading at work"

I will always defend Mace Windu From an in-universe perspective he had some really legitimate valid concerns. We as viewers ❗️KNOW THE ENDING ❗️so it’s easy for ppl to judge him and say “oh I would have done different” but the man was TRYING, and didn’t deserve his fate !

Mace Windu, a black man in a jedi robe, with a shaved head, talks to Chancellor Sheev Palpatine

Palpatine: Send him to me. I may be able to help. It may not look like it but I was once his age, and I feel a special connection to the boy after his assistance with the Naboo blockade some years ago.

Mace: Thank you, Chancellor, but I am sure Obi-Wan has it well in hand

Palpatine: Why, young Skywalker is a Jedi, is he not? The Jedi are under the Senate's jurisdiction, and as I am the chancellor of the Senate...

Two panels

In the first one, Mace looks serious and stares silently.
In the second, he looks with his eyes to the side and says "Of course, Chancellor." but he looks decidedly concerned

Quoting to include alt text for the attached image.

Screenshot of a tweet by @mktoon showing a scene from the tv show Andor, showing imperial soldiers charging into a crowd of protestors right before the incident known in Star Wars lore as The Ghorman Massacre takes place. “Remember that part in #Andor when all those reporters on Ghorman made it sound like the Ghormans were violent and the Empire HAD to send in soldiers to stop things from getting out of hand but in reality the soldiers WANTED things to get out of hand?
Yea, that was crazy huh?”

so many modern western filmmakers/showrunners are like "it has to be REALISTIC, and to me that means DEATH, characters have to die, that will make it REALISTIC" despite their actual shows being wildly unrealistic to the point it even will violate ITS OWN CANON LOGIC Lucas is cool

Note 🔞 @notebookishtype.bsky.social · 10/06/2025

I think about this so much. With Andor too. Jyn and Cassian both had Black dads/father figures and we don’t get any of that on screen. It’s barely referenced on screen.
