New post! Gird your students against crappy data that isn't saying anything...also, a new way to screw around with a y axis and mislead people. draft.blogger.com/blog/post/ed...
A bar graph featuring Grock, Fable, and GPT GenAI over time (release date, on x axis). On the y axis is version number. So, it looks like the GenAI is getting better every generation, when really the chart is just demonstrating the version number.

I picked up Vonnegut's Galapagos when I was in junior high because my older sister had to read it for AP English. It blew my mind. That book was the weirdest thing I had ever read and introduced me to sci-fi/fantasy as a way to unpack real issues. The first time a book blew my mind.

I went down a true-crime rabbit hole this summer after watching The Crash on Netflix. I emerged with a new way of explaining SEM. You see, investigation evidence boards are sort of like SEM path diagrams, complete with latent and observed variables. notawfulandboring.blogspot.com/2026/07/what...
A crime investigation board, with half of the board dedicated to evidence related to the motive, and the other half dedicated to evidece to determine if a crime was an accident.

This data reflects the ethnicity of the top three billed actors in movies created between 2022 and 2025 versus US census data. It comes from Reddit.

Friends...can you send me recommendations for your favorite psych papers that use SEM? I'm looking for simpler models that UGs can understand with a little help. Please accept my favorite example of a truncated y axis as payment. Thanks!
A truncated y axis, arranged so that tiny Sabrina Carpenter doesn't even come up to Taylor Swift's knee. The y axis ranges from five foot zero inchest to five feet ten inches and features different pop stars.

A consistent method of measurement over time is quite valuable. Even if Gallup has changed some behind-the-scenes methods like they say, why not continue doing the old measurement—for historical comparison, if nothing else—while noting that it's old and directing people to newer measurements too?

This plot from CNN’s article on measles is a *perfect* example of the dangers of auto-resizing plots. Although the data don’t change, and the communicated message *is* still correct, the impact of that message is very different on my phone and my wide-screen monitor.
Screenshot of the plot from my phone, showing measles cases in the US in 2023-2026 - very tall and skinny, it makes the slope of the 2026 cases nearly vertical. The line for the 2025 cases goes up at approximately a 60-degree angle Screenshot from widescreen monitor of the same plot. The 2026 cases are no longer as vertical, and a flattening of that line is visible The 2025 cases line is more of a 45-degree angle
