Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

The train arrived ahead precisely the fourteen minutes it would take her to reach the pier by the time Tartaglia’s eyesore of a flagship was ready to disembark. This was by no means a feat of national efficiency: if one wished to see trains run on time and boats set off on schedule, one needed to pay for it. She paid handsomely, and the results spoke for themselves.
“Nat,” Tartaglia said, walking down the pier to where she stood, squinting his lone eye at her – gossip aside, she still hadn’t found out how he’d gone and lost an eye, and she had forty million mora riding on it being self-inflicted, which she hoped to collect upon because the Regretor might declare open war against her if she won that bet.
At his side, buried deep under his coat and looking eminently murderous, the Consultant dipped his head forward and said:
“Lady Perlova.”
Nat’s smile widened, sharper than steel, as a flash of inspiration struck her. One of those instinctual bits of knowledge that made her such a terrible opponent to fight against: she didn’t need evidence when her gut dictated the way, and it had yet to steer her wrong.
“You poor thing,” she said, and then bodily snatched the surly bastard of a Consultant out of Tartaglia’s arm, looping one of her own against his. “You must be exhausted. I know just the thing to perk you right up.”
Golden eyes stared down at her for a moment, calculating, and then it was as if he’d deflated, gone all delicate and fragile like spun sugar.
“That sounds lovely.”
Tartaglia spluttered a murderous sound, but Nat refused to turn, instead looking at him over her shoulder as she expeditiously guided most esteemed Mr. Zhongli to the comfort and warmth of her waiting train.

“Don’t you have an Archon to report to and all that?” Nat said, eyebrows arched. “If you’ve done all your dues by then, I suppose you may join us for dinner later tonight.”
“Hey,” Tartaglia managed, face flushed and teeth bared, and he almost, almost looked the part of the scary Harbinger he was meant to be. “What do you mean—”
“I would love to get the chance to glimpse at your collection,” Zhongli murmured, voice muffled into the thick fur collar of his coat. “I’ve heard so much about it, after all.”
So they were quarreling, Nat surmised, and she’d bid on the winning horse yet again.
“It will be my pleasure, my friend,” she said, emphasizing the word as she tucked herself into his side and dragged him along.
Seething, Tartaglia was left to wait until her train had vacated the rails and his own came to pick him up and delivered him to the Capital. Nat forgot all about that, instead fully devoted in the rare pleasure of nitpicking the singularly most vicious bastard she’d ever known, who seemed, at least for the moment, to be far more crossed at Tartaglia than her, and therefore willing to bare the depths of his wit for her benefit.
It was exhilarating!

The intractable bit about the debate on what justice means is that in the current configuration, shunning someone for wrongdoing only has one logical end: death by abandonment. If you do something wrong and are publicly shunned, you will lose your job, your income, your house, and any tool to live.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.

The Florida AI lawsuit is some of the finest propaganda available today. It's fantastically well-written. It is also appealing to common sense understanding of AI, will reasonably go nowhere, and, I'm sure Uthmeier desperately hopes, will replace 10 million USD in the public consciousness.

“Here,” the Anemoboxer said, offering a contraption of glass and metal to the Pyrogunner.
The Pyrogunner refused to take it.
“The hell is that?” He asked instead, in the tone of a man whose parentage had been thoroughly insulted.
“The sight,” the Anemoboxer replied, and then, after a moment, fidgeted nervously. “So you can aim.”
The Pyrogunner stared at him for a long moment and then snorted. “Bless your heart, I don’t need that.”
The Anemoboxer looked down at the much shorter, thinner man, and then squinted into the distance, a good ten miles away, where Tartaglia’s forces were doing some light landscaping in the name of culling an abyssal intrusion that had just been reported the day prior.
“But it’s really far away,” the Anemoboxer said, voice small.
“Listen, Sven,” the Pyrogunner said, picking up the modified rifle with a grin that seemed to have been sketched right off Tartaglia’s face. “I am good at exactly one thing, but I might be the best in the whole damn world at that one thing.”
“Oh,” the Anemoboxer replied, hands held together and tucked into his belly as he watched. “Okay.”
The Pyrogunner dug his heels into the frozen cobble, and took aim. Immediately, the various channels in the riffle began to glow a sickly, burning red, and only then did Thrain realize the man had a pyro vision tucked into his belt, which hummed with uncanny resonance to the delusion pinned on the strap across his chest.
When he pulled the trigger, nothing happened for exactly as long as it took the bullet to reach its target.
And then hell ignited, a massive, howling sphere of fire and brimstone that cratered the landscape and consumed everything within it.
Well.
Almost.
It went out almost as instantly, sucked into a pinprick in space, devoured into nothing by the unseen maws of something that made Thrain’s spine tingle with recognition.
“Told ya,” the Pyrogunner said, propping the still steaming barrel against the leather reinforcements on his shoulder. “Needs more oomph to make …
