hey it’s October and that means we’re having an apple tasting and judging party. The varieties are anonymized, and guests are asked to assign ratings on a 1-10 scale. Tasting notes are also welcomed.

paragraph preceding the above:
CHRIS'S DEVOTION TO Al was far from uncommon by 2025. Millions were falling for the machine's obsequiousness. It felt like another ripple from the downfall of the old institutions. Structures fall apart, people become directionless, and the tech companies swoop in with new ways to monetize our feeling of purposelessness—our desire to be of use—by telling us we aren't worthless. Far from it. We're redesigning the future of civilization.

Author Talk
Kailee Pedersen
Thursday, Sept. 24 7:00-8:30pm
Join author Kailee Pedersen for a conversation about her new novel The Minimalist, joined by Winchester librarian Tony Corsentino. In this lively and wide-ranging discussion, they will explore the ways that the author's experience as an intercountry adoptee from China informs her creative outlook.
For fans of Tar and The Piano Teacher, this gruesome and unsettling psychological drama is a darkly lucid literary portrait of a classical composer's descent into madness.

the main target for this kind of marketing consists, I think, of people for whom the factors limiting their “speed” have basically nothing to do with what kind of “gravel bike” they ride

i am enjoying picturing a ride on the transatlantic railroad 🌊🚂🌊
Excerpt from a review of a new book on the California Gold Rush:

The titular "rush" is the touchstone of the narrative, referring to a hurry-scurry imperative to gain wealth and power. In Philbrick's expansive telling, the "rush" had a deleterious effect on everything from the lives of immigrants and Native peoples to the integrity of America's legal and judicial systems, and even hastened the nation's descent into civil war. But it was also a catalyst for astonishing technological advancements, from the transatlantic railroad to motion pictures. Tracing stories as varied as those of white supremacists vying for control of San Francisco,

anyway, i am totally fascinated with how overbuilt with RR infrastructure Massachusetts became before the triumph of the automobile. As one rail-trail advocate put it, these trails are "long linear museums" of that chapter in the state's economic/capitalist history. With beavers.

so. i love this. It’s one of the most aromatic NA IPAs I’ve ever tried, and it’s totally faithful to the original, including the tropical fruit notes and the bitter, dank finish. It’s got that “de-alcoholized” flavor note you catch with almost all NA IPAs, but otherwise it’s basically Sip.
