Good point :0) But all the tanks have the same erosional /scalloped edges on the uprights. The large fountain at Corbridge. Plus the water tank on the south west compound has scalloped edge. If memory serves me right, even the tank at Vindolanda's west gate has a scalloped edge.

I'm not sure about the washing clothes explanation. The same scalloped edge is on all the uprights at Corbridge. I doubt they were washing clothes in their drinking water. But who knows:0) I tell visitors it's an erosional feature caused by people clipping the top when taking the water away in jugs

The large tank in the SE corner of Housesteads Fort was built to flush the latrines, it could hold over 23,000 litres of water. It blocked the SE angle tower so must have been needed. Here it is today next to Knowles' sketch of 1898. Knowles was an extremely good draughtsman.

The only good thing about this awful heat wave is occasionally wonderful parch marks appear. I just love this Historic England photo of Corbridge Roman Town with the intersection of Dere Street and the Stanegate clearly visible in the field immediately West of the museum.

The north granary at Housesteads. Essential for storing food for the troops. The floor of the granary was raised to keep it dry and vermin free. The building sits on the highest driest part of the fort.

🏛 University of Glasgow researchers have made an unprecedented discovery of golden paint on a Roman altar. 🎨 The altar, found near Hadrian’s Wall, was part of a Mithraic temple, a mystery cult associated with light and dark popular with soldiers. 🖌 Read on! historyhit.substack.com/p/monday-23r...

The phallus is on the first course of stones, on the east wall of the caldarium. Just above the ground level on your left as you walk into the hot room. It's not alone. There is a little figure on one side, and an 'egg' or oval on the other. Then the next stone has a bird. What does it all mean?

Lynn Bridgett 🇬🇧🇪🇺 @northernlass208.bsky.social · 09/10/2025
I hope you found the phallus in the caldarium of the bath house? Plus the one over the river at the base of the bridge abutment. It makes you wonder just how many of these guys were dotted around the fort.

RIB 1065. The absolutely stunning tombstone for Regina, 2nd century. Found in 1878, in an area that is today Morrison's carpark, South Shields. On display in Arbeia Roman Fort. Unusual for the last line of the inscription which is in Palmyrene - Regina, the freedwoman of Barates, alas.

Sycamore Gap tree was at least 100-120 years old, ring count finds
Age ties in with theory tree was planted in 19th century by landowner known as ‘the man who saved Hadrian’s Wall’ Scientists have for the first time confirmed the age of the felled Sycamore Gap tree, adding weight to a theory that it was planted in the late 19th century by a landowner hailed as “the man who saved Hadrian’s Wall”. Historic England published the conclusion of an investigation by a team of experts who carried out the first dendrochronological – or tree-ring counting – analysis of the tree. Continue reading...
