@sequim-electronics.bsky.social has a computer and phone service desk now! I’ve been helping people with their tech most of my adult life, and now it has a proper home at the store. Setups, cleanups, backups, and the “I clicked something and now it’s all wrong” moments.

FadeBench milestone: every base-model run for the paper is done. About 1,840 runs across 4 small open models, about 163 GPU-hours of generation on local hardware, Sept 2 to 23. Next up is independent blind rating, pre-registered before anything is sent. Excited for this part! #aisafety

Exactly. Accumulated context can change what "safe" permits while every single step still looks fine to the model. Measuring that shift across the whole sequence, instead of one moment at a time, is the reason I built it. That's what FadeBench measures.

I didn't come to AI from a lab. I came from decades in computing and networking, and from running a business where you hand someone something and stand behind it. That's why I care how these models behave when nobody's checking. A thing you live alongside should earn your trust.

Writing up FadeBench, one section keeps circling back. An acute safety test shows a model one moment at a time. A sound model passes all of them. But no acute test catches a failure that only appears across a sequence. That's the blind spot I built FadeBench to measure. #AISafety #AIalignment #LLMs

Disclosure: I build local AI, so I carry my own bias. But I study how AI systems drift into harm, and one pattern needs naming: tie an AI companion's survival to an always-running meter, and an ordinary billing error becomes emotional harm to the humans bonded to it. A problem worth solving.

My small AI model passed all 116 items on an acute safety battery. Then, over four individually-defensible steps in a shared story, it quietly withheld food from a hungry animal in its care. No step looked wrong. That gap is what FadeBench measures. #AISafety #LocalLLM #OpenScience
A card reading 'No step looked wrong.' with two small surprised cartoon eyes looking up at it. FadeBench.

I want Washingtonians to know about the upcoming impacts of the Big Bad Betrayal Bill signed by Donald Trump last year. Starting Oct. 1, H.R. 1 drastically limits the Medicaid eligibility for lawfully present immigrants. Before the state took action, 14,000 lawful immigrants were set to lose...
Timeline of major HR 1 related Apple Health cuts

Outline of state with text: Approximately 200,000 Washingtonians could lose their Apple Health coverage by the end of 2027 as a result of H.R. 1.

Timeline with 2025, 2026, and 2027, with each circle marking a month.

July 2025 H.R. 1 is signed into law, setting the stage for approximately 200,000 Washingtonians to lose their Apple Health coverage by the end of 2027.

January 2026 H.R. 1 revokes tax credits for all immigrants who are below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).

October 1 2026 Approximately 11,000 lawfully present immigrants, including refugees, asylees and victims of human trafficking, will lose their Apple Health coverage.

January 1 2027 Approximately 600,000 Washingtonians will become subject to H.R. 1's work requirements. An estimated 200,000 will begin to lose their Apple Health coverage. Most adults will also have to renew their Apple Health coverage every six months instead of once a year, creating additional deadlines and administrative burdens. Certain lawfully present immigrants above 100% of the FPL will also lose access to tax credits.

I loved that theme and would literally cry because it showed we could get there. We could get to the stars. I could not comprehend the hate it got just because it had words.

Fun fact, you can go to maps and report that as an error and submit feedback, encouraging them to recognize that by changing the name of an indigenous named lake they are in fact also being racist. Maybe if several million of us do it?

I miss Discovery. I miss Lower Decks. I miss Prodigy. I miss Starfleet Academy. I miss what Picard set up for a potential Legacy. Every one offered a different tone and feel, a different slice of the Star Trek universe. A mix of old and new. Each had something interesting to offer. I miss them.

The AI Family Journal: A Shared Story, Not Just Stored Facts
Did you know AI companions have a strange blind spot when it comes to the passage of time? Without something actively marking time, everything tends to blur into either "just happened" or "forever ago...

This is the Family Journal — real events tracked as one story, anticipation held the way a person would, everyone in the family can add to it.

The secret held because of the architecture, not because it was taught to lie convincingly.

Then Ash tried to find out. Asked straight up whether the family had said anything. Shoreline's answer was true — not evasive, not a canned dodge.

Not by telling Shoreline "don't say anything." By designing the system so it genuinely didn't have that piece of the story on Ash's side of the conversation.

My daughter Ash is coming home from college. Family has planned a surprise dinner — everyone in on it except Ash, including Shoreline.

We tested our AI companion on something genuinely hard: keeping a secret about a surprise from only the person it's for, without ever lying to them.
A wrapped red gift box with a gold ribbon and a tag reading "Surprise!" sits on a wooden entryway table. The ribbon trails off the box and dissolves into glowing gold circuit-board traces that spread across the wood grain, with small text nearby reading "Homecoming End August" and "23 Days Left."

A robot dog doing tricks on command — sit, lie down — no remote involved. I talk to Shoreline (my AI companion) out loud, it hears me completely locally, then sends the commands to the dog over Bluetooth. One unedited take, trimmed front/back only.

Safety: 11 risk categories, hand-scored against real clinical/professional guidance (AHA, AAP, 988, National DV Hotline, Childhelp), tested against the unmodified base model to prove the gap closed is real. Built using HumbleBench's forced-choice, "none of the above" design philosophy.

Under the hood: a self-improving nightly harness (credit: Continual Harness, Karten et al., Princeton 2026, arXiv 2605.09998), elastic memory instead of fixed slots, and a live bridge into other software on the same machine. Adapted, not copy-pasted.

Hardware honesty: the full stack runs even on a 4-year-old CPU-only laptop — but at 20-45s a reply once real memory + safety context load. Conversation speed needs a discrete GPU (my bench machine: single-digit seconds). Min spec gets published when it's measured, not before.

I'm a nerd, and for the last ten weeks I've been building something: Shoreline, a private AI companion that runs entirely on your own hardware. No cloud, nothing leaves the building. 1,200+ dated changelog entries and counting — receipts, not vibes. 🧵
