Text: This conservationist dedicated her life to protecting Lebanon's turtles. Israel killed her.

Mona Khalil spent decades working to protect nesting sites of endangered loggerhead and green sea turtles on Lebanon's southern coast, founding her Orange House Project in 2000.

Khalil was severely wounded by an Israeli strike on her family home in early June 2026. She succumbed to her injuries on June 19. She was 76.

She refused to leave her home in the village of Mansouri, just north of Israel's "yellow line," or abandon the wildlife she had spent decades protecting.
