(1/2): Have you read our latest #VoicesOfResistance dispatch yet? In “Violent Domination: Legacies of the American Empire,” Tina Al-khersan examines how securitisation connects state violence at home with US violence abroad, and how resistance can challenge these systems of domination.
“If the state can unleash violence on its own civilians, what then can it do to the ‘others’ deemed less worthy?”“Violence imbued every point of a colonizing state’s formation and maintenance.”“Securitisation thus became the means for which the United States was able to continue to use violence as a tool to maintain power and dominance.”

She was born, raised and educated in the twin-island state of Antigua & Barbuda and then moved onto Barbados and Jamaica where she pursued her legal studies.   She describes herself as a “Jane of many trades” as she is an accomplished lawyer, creative entrepreneur, gender justice and LGBTQI+ activist, content creator, public speaker, writer, narrative change practitioner, black feminist, philanthropy professional and deeply passionate about the Caribbean region. This multi-dimensionality shines through her work and gives her a unique vantage point in which she approaches every opportunity. A key part of Zoë’s life and work is centered around gratitude. She is the creator of the mantra “life nice. Thank you, more please.” which has grown from mantra to movement, inspiring many others to shift their perspective and see life through a more expansive lens. It is all of this passion, lived experience and dynamism that Zoe brings to her intervention, this panel discussion and to life, more broadly.Patrice Daniel: Patrice Daniel is an Afro-Caribbean feminist and Psychotherapist from Barbados. She holds a B.A. in Psychology and a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counselling from Vermont, USA. Having minored in Sociology and Anthropology, she locates the individual person within the wider socio-cultural context. Patrice’s recent work has included supporting gender-focused research, advising within world health systems, and organising around Global South feminism as a distinct political identity. She has a significant history in social justice, particularly in sexual and reproductive justice and combating gender-based violence. As a feminist and anti-racist practitioner, Patrice creates participatory workshops, guides student research, and challenges regional and international organisations to engage in anti-colonial work.Judith Wedderburn: Ms. Judith Wedderburn is the recently retired Director of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, (FES) Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean, and for over 30 years, has been an advocate in the field of gender and development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. (2/3): In “Sell Your Cleverness,” @petramolnar.com challenges the inevitability of tech-driven borders — and the idea that people can be reduced to risks to be scored, bodies to be sorted and data points to be tracked.
“Rather, I have seen again and again the tenacity, care, stubbornness, creativity, and contestation of people who the system tries as hard as it might to reduce to data points and iris scans to remain steadfastly themselves.”“Let us, instead, practice the bewildered conviction that no one is illegal, that no one is a threat for moving, that apartheid will fall, and that any notion of a safe and secure world should always be rooted in care."

(1/3): At today’s borders, drones, biometric scanners and #AI systems are sold as smarter, safer and more objective ways to manage human movement. But behind the promise of innovation lies a border-industrial complex built on #surveillance, #securitisation and profit. #VoicesOfResistance
“There is a lie at the heart of every modern border, and it is dressed as innovation”“The border remains one of the most lucrative markets on earth (Akkerman; Akkerman et al.), and every political panic about people-on-the-move becomes a sales opportunity (De Genova)”“Feminist and decolonial traditions have always insisted that real security is the presence of what people actually need: housing, a doctor, a community that will not turn you in”

(2/3): In "One Thing After Another: The Politics of Police Technologies", Chris Jones explores how digital policing and #AI reinforce surveillance, repression, and everyday inequalities & why resisting individual technologies isn't enough without challenging the broader systems that produce them.
"Opposition to a particular law, technology or corporation will, on its own, never be sufficient.”“The technological forces that are reshaping police powers are generated through complex webs of money, power, science and academia. […]Overcoming that is a far larger challenge than single-issue campaigns.”
110
NOOR @noornetwork.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
(1/3): #Surveillance rarely arrives all at once. It grows one technology at a time - from airport spot-checks to AI-powered policing, predictive algorithms, and expanding border controls. Each new tool promises "security" while quietly reshaping the limits of state power.
“The digital harvest sought by the police is in fact one of fruits that ripen, but are never quite ready.”“Even supposedly ‘progressive’ governments tend to continue providing new repressive powers to the forces of law and order, with fear and suspicion whipped up by media outlets to help usher in new laws.”“Patrick Williams has aptly noted that predictive policing would best be referred to as “predictable” policing (Amnesty International, 2025).”

(2/3): The impacts are material and uneven. They are shaped by both colonial legacies and contemporary power structures that continue to influence whose rights, voices, and futures are valued and protected.
On Caribbean traditions of resistance
“This is the region of the Haitian Revolution, the first successful slave revolt to build a free Black republic. It is the region of Audre Lorde, Sylvia Wynter, Claudia Jones, Walter Rodney, Frantz Fanon, M. Jacqui Alexander. Caribbean feminist, Black, queer, Indigenous and working-class movements have been teaching the world how to resist for centuries.”
On polycrisis “Polycrisis is not a backdrop to fascism and fundamentalism. It is the condition that allows them to grow.”On Caribbean resistance as tradition “The Caribbean has never stopped producing movements, thinkers and organizers who refuse the terms of their oppression. That refusal is itself a tradition.”

Roots of Hate: Fascist and Fundamentalist Narratives and Actors in the Caribbean - Consequences in the RegionOn the region in crisis “This mapping is being published while a region is in crisis, and the crisis is not singular. Cuba is enduring the intensified suffocation of a renewed U.S. embargo, Haiti is facing the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the Western Hemisphere, while Jamaica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti are still rebuilding from the October 2025 Hurricane Melissa.”On the consequences in the Caribbean
“The consequences are not abstract. They translate into court cases defending colonial-era anti-sodomy laws, regional conferences, billboards greeting delegates at regional summits, and legislation banning gender-affirming care.”

(2/3): It traces the actors, alliances, and infrastructures that sustain these movements. It shows how ideology, resources, and political strategy move together across countries, connecting local campaigns to broader global agendas.
On how anti-rights movements operate “Anti-gender and anti-rights movements move across all of these roots, frequently connecting actors, sharing strategies, and targeting the most marginalized.”On the Caribbean as a site of thought “Shaped by geopolitics that treat the region as a site of extraction rather than a site of thought, this mapping follows the lead of, and learns alongside, the scholars, activists and movements already doing this work for decades.”On Caribbean feminist and LGBTIQ+ movements “Caribbean feminist and LGBTIQ+ movements have long been the ones naming these forces, tracking them and resisting them on the ground.”On the anti-rights project “Anti-gender and anti-rights organizations are well resourced, well coordinated and ideologically committed to reverse the rights that feminist, queer and progressive movements won.”
