How do researchers measure terrorism? Measuring terrorist attacks and deaths comes with many challenges. People do not always agree on what characteristics define an act of terrorism.
Line chart showing confirmed deaths, including all victims and attackers, who died because of a terrorist attack. A terrorist attack is defined here as the use of violence to achieve a political, economic, religious, or social goal through intimidation or coercion by an actor that is not the state. This definition comes from the data source, the Global Terrorism Database, which is maintained by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland. The chart shows a global total and the totals for a selection of countries. The chart is licensed CC BY to Our World in Data.

French man, 86, issues historic apology for family’s role in transatlantic slavery
Pierre Guillon de Prince believed to be first in France to formally apologise for ancestors’ allegiances to slavery An 86-year-old man has issued what is believed to be the first formal apology by someone in France for their family’s role in transatlantic slavery. Pierre Guillon de Prince’s ancestors, based in Nantes, which was the country’s largest port for transatlantic slavery, were shipowners who transported about 4,500 enslaved Africans and owned plantations in the Caribbean. Early warning system for food insecurity miss millions in crisis
The leading global early warning system for acute food insecurity systematically underestimates the scale of crisis-level hunger, missing around one in five people affected. As a result, global assessments significantly understate the scope of global humanitarian need, with serious consequences for the timing and adequacy of aid to vulnerable populations.
