Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America. Each journey would be staggeringly expensive — and dangerous.

Trump Administration Considers Using Ships to Deport Immigrants (Gift Article)
Journeys to destinations including El Salvador and Venezuela could take days and cost millions. Officials cautioned that discussions are still preliminary.

I'm growing more suspicious whether OpenAI's unreleased new model is reasoning in a real sense. "Taste" implies it is not simply random. Too soon to say of course. Anything novel has an inherent appearance of brilliance even if discovered through brute force and nondeterminism.

Yup the reason Obama agreed to release billions to Iran, as unpalatable as that was, is because this outcome was correctly known to be much worse. And the risk of this outcome increased dramatically with a decade of improvements in Iranian missiles and knowledge of drone warfare.

He isn't worried about that. He has a net worth north of 100 million, has at least 4 homes, and is privileged enough to receive a government bailout should that occur.

Trump is getting ready to lift sanctions on Russia so his family and oligarchs can make billions by purchasing Lukoil's profitable overseas assets for less than they are worth. This sale would be a bribe from Putin. That is all Trump wants.

Democrats need to state it plainly: Trump is stealing from Americans and we intend to seize back every last penny. Only question is what we do with the land after President AOC seizes and bulldozes Mar a lago. I think we turn it into a nature preserve.

The term “remigration” is associated with the extreme right and only came into widespread usage in 2023-4. Even Germany’s AfD avoided using the term in 2024 for fear of scaring away voters. Today the US government is celebrating the “victories” it’s racked up in the “ethnic cleansing” column.

If you're in the right public spaces you can see the different capabilities coming together. Within 12 months the debate will shift away from, "they aren't reasoning logically". It will be very clear that they can. These posts are intentionally vague. No, I'm not sharing exactly how. 🤫

Fun fact: LLMs can make decisions through logical reasoning. It still isn't thinking like us but the capabilities are there. The capability (algorithm) is more important than specific implementation (a brain or a model).

You see your problem is thinking high inflation and prices are actually high. If you would all just agree high is low then the problem would be solved. Here is a mathematical equation proving it: High < Low Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Which I agree with. But that doesn't disprove our ability to discover equivalent algorithms. And that research is growing progressively more automated. What LLMs and related models have proven is that if we have the data, a model can be trained to interpret it.

If we don't know where consciousness comes from then how can we know how close we are to it or not? The best we can say is nonzero odds. There are multiple human brain mapping projects. That coupled with LLMs will lead to new discoveries about the mind. Eventually we will understand it fully.

Nonningham @nonningham.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I don't think LLMs are sentient but future advances may allow for it. Not actually understanding consciousness we can't actually recognize it if we accidentally create it. So do we encourage a good habit of ethical behavior now or wait, then needing to reverse course after AI bigotry is entrenched?

The RMB replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency is far fetched. But China is helping make the dollar so toxic there is a shot. EU would push the Euro as reserve, but oil and other commodities would shift to RMB, raising China's power significantly. The liberal world order is failing.

screenshot of a three-paragraph excerpt from the quote-skeeted article, with the final sentences of the third paragraph highlighted in grey, from "and now" onwards. excerpt reads as follows:

When he appeared before the state Senate that day to testify against the new redistricting plans, he was joined by three other veteran Black politicians. Although Fields, a 63-year-old lawyer, has a reputation as an even-keeled consensus builder, he grew emotional as he spoke.

“To me, it is personal,” he told the Senate committee. “Since Reconstruction, Louisiana has elected four African Americans to Congress. And you’re looking at all of them. Four.” Even though nearly a third of Louisiana’s population is Black.

“You said something very profound,” state Sen. Gary Carter Jr., an African American Democrat from New Orleans, told Fields. “From the 1870s all the way through [the] present, just you four gentlemen—that’s it. And now this body wants to reduce that. ‘We want to cut it. That’s too many.’ How do we not be outraged?”

Of course what we're witnessing is likely the birth of official state TV of Trumplandia. Eventually Trump will just fill that void with friendly reporters and microphones. He literally knocked a wing of the Whitehouse down. Replacing the entire press pool is a nothingburger by comparison.

A long way from a fly brain to any mammal but AI research is already at a place where understanding the human mind is largely a question of data. Not easy but obtainable. I really don't think most people are ready to grapple with what we will discover. Especially if it reveals there is no magic.
