Congresswoman Kaptur's campaign recently began running ads with hurtful language and references to
"trans ideology". This is the type of harmful ad we expect from Derek Merrin and the Republicans. We are disappointed and ashamed that the Kaptur campaign stooped to their level by using this incredibly dangerous anti-trans rhetoric.
The ad gets one thing right, Derek Merrin would rather talk about his obsession with trans people than his party's disastrous handling of the war in Iran, or his part in the largest corruption scandal in the history of the state of Ohio. So why let him change the subject? Right now EVERY Ohioan is feeling the pain at the gas pump, in their electric bills and at the grocery store, all thanks to Merrin, Trump, and the Republican Party.
We are confident that Congresswoman Kaptur will once again win re-election, but it will be because of her long record of bringing investment to Northwest Ohio and fighting for working people while Derek Merrin will be nothing more than a rubber stamp for continued Trump chaos.
We stand with many in our community including the Lucas County Stonewall Democrats in calling on the Kaptur campaign to take this ad down immediately.

New to me: The Ohio Supreme Court today issued a “vote change” for a merits opinion issued yesterday. The 2nd announcement switches Justice Brunner from concurring in jm’t only to joining Justice Fisher’s dissent “after further consideration.” Case goes from 3-1-1-2 to 3-1-3. (Links in 1st reply)

To be entitled to a writ of mandamus, Duckett must establish, by clear and convincing evidence, (1) a clear legal right to the requested relief, (2) a clear legal duty on the part of the board of elections to provide it, and

And it points to caselaw in which we have emphasized the importance of a person's intent in determining whether a place constitutes a residence for voting purposes.

{Para 12} Regarding Count I of the complaint, which of us who have ever
practiced law has not muttered a choice epithet about our favorite judge? More important, which of us who are judges has not done something to earn an occasional raspberry? It is obvious in this case that the respondent did not expect his mild outburst to be quoted in the newspaper. Respondent self-administered the appropriate disciplinary measure by publicly apologizing to Judge Heydinger.
{para 13} Speaking of judges earning epithets, Judge Ridge baited the respondent into making the comments that were the basis of Count II of the complaint. Judge Ridge's actions and comments were outrageous and precipitated respondent's barbed response. If anyone were to be reprimanded based upon the facts in Count II, it ought to have been Judge Ridge.
{para 14} Finally, I am always concerned to see a lawyer reprimanded for his
speech. Our legal system relies upon vigorous advocacy, which occasionally leads to spirited interplay between lawyers and judges. We ought not rule in a way that
may affect that friction.

I sympathize with the cause, and I could very well be missing something, but this seems more like a professor assigning a reading list to student than a lawyer writing to persuade a court. Is this kind of thing normal in SCOTUS amicus practice? If anything is normal in the shadow docket, I guess.

An Ohio judge argued that because a statute that banned girls from getting abortions without a judge’s OK was enacted to “comply” with Roe, the *state statute* can’t be overruled by a mere state constitutional amendment. The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously dismissed. (Link in comment)h

Relator has a clear legal right to continue exercising the adjudicatory authority given to
juvenile courts by statute and rule. R.C. 2151.85 (the judicial-bypass statute) explicitly vests
jurisdiction in juvenile courts to hear petitions by unemancipated minors for authorization of
abortion without parental notification. That statute, enacted to comply with then-controlling federal constitutional requirements, remains valid Ohio law today and has not been repealed or amended by the General Assembly. Likewise, Juv.R. 1(A) underscores that juvenile-court proceedings, including bypass matters, are part of a unified judicial system for minors, intended
to be fair and efficient. Until late 2023, Ohio's juvenile courts routinely held bypass hearings under these authorities. Relator's own court handled approximately two such cases per year (Aff.
94).
This bypass process was born of federal constitutional mandates that existed for over forty
years. In Bellotti v. Baird, the U.S. Supreme Court held that a state which requires parental involvement must provide a "confidential and expedited" judicial bypass so a minor can prove
maturity or best interests (443 U.S. 622, 643-644 (1979)). And in Ohio v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health, the Court reaffirmed that parental consent laws must include a bypass to ensure a parent has no "absolute, and possibly arbitrary, veto" over the minor's decision (497
U.S. 502, 510(1990)). While Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Org., 142 S.Ct. 2228 (2022), overruled Roe and ended federal constitutional protection of abortion, these earlier cases remain

the reason Ohio adopted R.C. 2151.85 and integrated bypass into its judicial system. Thus, the
bypass procedure is not some extraneous or discretionary function—it was established as a
necessary judicial proceeding under Ohio law. Even after Dobbs, R.C. 2151.85 has not been
repealed by the legislature. Accordingly, unless and until a competent authority declares it
invalid, Relator's court retains a right (indeed, an obligation) to conduct bypass adjudications
according to that statute and applicable rules.

One good thing about election law, at least here, is that poll workers are trained to accept “close enough” for voting purposes. But now I notice that there are no four-name examples. I’ll suggest that they add those. Still, I get your valid point of wanting to use your actual correct legal name.

Social scientists distinguish between two kinds of polarization, ideological and affective. Ideological polarization occurs when people move further apart in their political beliefs and preferences. But affective polarization, which is the true scourge, takes place when your politics become a core feature of your identity, leading you to have negative feelings toward those who disagree with you.
Studies suggest that over the past few decades, affective polarization in the United States has grown faster than ideological polarization, and that the negative feelings some Americans have toward their ideological opponents increasingly involve hostility or disdain, rooted in a sense that the other side is immoral. That kind of clannishness, I found, is reshaping the college experience.

Is Ohio D gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton giving up on Bluesky? She hasn’t posted in a couple days even though her Facebook feed is active. Plus, and this is weird for a major political candidate, she only makes her posts visible to logged in users.
