The NPS should have been protecting the land and people, not the border wall construction that nearly emptied the spring. Today, USFS should consider who they are protecting, in the name of "public safety". Shame on the US Forest Service.

Today, Quitobaquito springs is yet again under attack as the threat of secondary border wall construction looms near. Construction crews have begun clearing saguaros around the spring.

Six years ago, O'odham land defenders were arrested by National Park Service rangers while protecting Quitobaquito springs, another sacred site, after NPS closed all access to the sacred spring.

Border wall construction is destroying the Sonoran Desert’s most sacred spring. Growing up as a Tohono O’odham woman on my ancestral homelands taught me one thing above all: Take care of the land and the land will take care of you. When the federal government ramped up border-wall construction in Arizona, I knew I had to fight for my homelands, which are split in half by the U.S-Mexico border. I knew that meant activating my community, facing construction workers and opposing the U.S. Border Patrol and its long history of brutalizing O’odham tribal members.

We have witnessed unprecedented damage as border wall construction has waived dozens of environmental protections. Earlier this year, construction crews working near the Tohono O'odham nation destroyed the Las Playas intaglio, the oldest geoglyph in the Americas.

This perpetuates the cycle of death and disappearance, and continues to allow CBP to have no public oversight on the harms they do unto the people crossing and the land they continue to destroy.

These deaths are not isolated tragedies. They reflect the human consequences of policies that seek to deter migration by increasing the risks people face. The border wall is not just a symbol of decades of border violence, but also a tool to cause harm, separation and death.

No More Deaths | No Más Muertes @nomoredeaths.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Between 2019 and 2021, many sections of the existing border wall were replaced with 30- to 40-foot steel barriers, and new stretches of wall were built to the same specifications. Since then, the number of documented deaths resulting from wall falls has risen dramatically.

While No More Deaths is not directly involved in these resistance efforts, we stand with those who are. The expansion of border infrastructure is not simply an effort to create a physical barrier; it is part of a broader strategy that has consistently relied on making migration more dangerous.

As part of the Prevention Through Deterrence strategy, border barriers were intentionally constructed to push people into remote and rugged terrain, where they were more likely to become injured, lost, or abandoned and far less likely to encounter help when they needed it.

No More Deaths | No Más Muertes @nomoredeaths.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
As border wall construction expands across the borderlands, including the addition of the double border wall, we wanted to take a moment to say that WALLS DO NOT WORK. They do not deter migration, just make the crossing more deadly while desecrating the land that they stand on.
