the "adapt or die" people failed to consider the secret third option of forming a neoluddite community where I'm selling my latest video game on usb sticks in a little lemonade stand

It's not just needed, it's necessary! Unless we accept people wanting us to be meat proxies to create it for us.

At the end of the day, the bottleneck is always going to be humans having to interpret the result of AI. You either accept that you won’t control the output, or you are going to be slower than just letting the AI loose.

The manager was representing the QA team, who’s overwhelmed by tickets that are basically vibe coded. The devs were talking about them being overwhelmed, and having to also do testing, which they are not paid to do, being another thing on their plate that takes precious time and resources.

I just experienced the first talk about AI in a company that was a little confrontational between the devs and the manager.

This would actually be helpful tbh, I’m not sure how much content moderators get paid (if they get paid), but that can be a very shitty job if you get a lot of liveleaks type content. Maybe stuff like that could be handed to jev.

After experiencing this so many times I gotta say, two things worked for me. Push through if you still feel motivated to continue or take a break. But don't do "I have this other great idea, let me research it" kind of break, cuz then you won't come back to the project. Ask me how I know.

Just tried out blickeditor.com today, and I think it’s definitely going to be a replacement to other NLEs very shortly. The Open Beta has some kinks, but as soon as it becomes more bug- and edge-case-free I’ll move over c:

I would suggest the same thing. I'm currently using a 16" M1 Macbook Pro and the battery is not the same anymore. When I next upgrade, I will get a Framework 13 Pro. Framework also gives a platform to other chip/motherboard makers. You could swap Intel/AMD to an ARM or Risc-V based motherboard!

This is kinda similar to Anthropic saying Mythos is too dangerous. If this is to be considered real danger, I’m afraid OpenAI and Anthropic are at the “boy who cried wolf” stage of sharing important warnings.

I think the most hilarious part is how hungry they are for data still. Putting their grubby fingers on everything they can:

I think the part of how LLMs are implemented today that should change is its monetisation and ownership. Collecting all profits from the sale of all of humanity’s knowledge is fundamentally flawed. The tech should be fully open for everyone, the only expense should be the hardware to run on.
100
nomantis @nomant.is · 21/07/2026
Just to be clear, I’m not disagreeing on the point that stealing the collective work of humanity with total disregard to its creators is deplorable. I’m trying to say that whatever they tried to create wasn’t possible without the amount of data they stole.
100
nomantis @nomant.is · 21/07/2026
Yeah, the underlying science doesn’t necessitate the theft. But if you want to scale it to such a degree, there isn’t enough literature in one company to achieve a good result. LLMs in their current form require large amounts of data to train.
110
nomantis @nomant.is · 21/07/2026
It just so happens, that that is not legal. And they will never negotiate with all the stakeholders, only the ones that have enough power (money for lawsuits) that it's absolutely vital to engage. If you're a lone creator publishing content, you're basically fucked.
100
nomantis @nomant.is · 21/07/2026
There was a large technical limitation to making LLMs work, which was the collection/production of the extreme amounts of data necessary for their training. No single entity has enough data alone, hence why these companies chose the second option: downloading the entirety of the internet.

It probably is! Irl convos carry a lot more context, it’s easier to ask questions and find common ground. This can’t be replicated by any kind of social media at the moment.

Nobody is really forcing us to take part in every conversation, which is a good thing, you have to preserve your mental health. But in general I think we can learn a lot from each other.

Many people have different reasons to be on here. I’m sure you can find every type of person in the replies of a large post. Someone who’s there for attention, who’s trolling, who’s heated due to emotionally connecting with the topic. And also people who are genuinely interested in the discussion.

Somehow it’s still better than twitter though. Not sure how to deal with it, taking it seriously. I’ve always been avoidant of conflict, so I usually don’t engage. But I see the backside of this way of avoidance more and more. There’s got to be a middle-ground where we can have genuine convos.

Economics can not be a hard science until we find determinism in our universe. It’s dependent on too many fields, like politics, natural resources and in the end, human psychology, which is extremely difficult to predict. Vaccines are rigorously proven to work before mass adoption.

My all time favourite question without a satisfactory answer
010
nomantis @nomant.is · 19/07/2026
To be honest, if you only read the marketing and never looked at any of the output, you would still think it is (Though sometimes the output amazes me at how bad it is into believing it still is vaporware)

nomantis @nomant.is · 19/07/2026
Deciding whether it's worth it is mostly for people who have no experience in the field they are trying to automate away. I see this as the main problem, it's just "I want the same or better work and pay less for it". There are exceptions, I'm sure, but this is what I see in general.

nomantis @nomant.is · 19/07/2026
That's a truly stupid take from the author. On the other hand I don't subscribe to the idea that humans are perfect, never hallucinate or make mistakes. But AI marketing suggests this exact thing for LLMs. It's not a net positive just because it's cheaper, there are other concerns too.

nomantis @nomant.is · 19/07/2026
My only uncertainty about this is the way those making money hand-over-fist market it. I don't think this tech has the same growth potential in every industry, so there is no blanket efficiency gain that they have been basing all of their marketing on. It's them who make the money, not most of us.

I was searching for a mentor so I can see how to work well in a legacy codebase and I think I found one, but due to siloing in the org, everyone has their part of the app cut out for them. This made it hard to work with them. In the end I couldn’t move closer in my tasks to work with them.

nomantis @nomant.is · 18/07/2026
I just had this happen, in an org where I don’t really feel at home due to the other coworkers having different priorities than I. I still consider myself a career starter, and I want to push myself to learn new and hard things, but the others aren’t at that stage anymore.

Also, I’d say that anything that requires age verification to a government body will also come with privacy loss. It’d be a sizeable price to pay even for a working solution, but for something that is ineffective from the get-go it’s ludicrous.

This sort of legislation is misguided and frankly misplaced effort. All these can and will be worked around, just like buying alcohol/cigarettes. These sort of issues can only be helped by education and care, so we learn to keep a safe boundary.

I’m already bought in to the ideas you present in the documentary, so I’m not a good gauge for how good of a conversation starter it is, but I will try and show it around just to see. Thank you for pouring in the time to make it. I hope this advances the conversation!

I was waiting to see this somehow outside of the UK, since I don’t have access to Channel 4. It’s a great watch! I did need a VPN to access it outside the UK.
