Love this story, but the author repeats the mischaracterisation of the desert as an “empty” space where solar farms can be installed cheaply. Deserts are not empty. Deserts are teeming with specific life, flora & fauna, not to mention frequently being treasured ancestral land of Native people. (1/2)

An oldie but a goodie: Christopher Atwood's Facebook post on how describing steppe peoples like Mongols as "tribes" justifies colonial and imperial projects by Russia and China. (Thanks for @chakarchinggis.bsky.social for bringing this back up the other day!)
Facebook post by Chris Atwood: "Mongol armies defeated the Bulghars, the Bashkirs, and the Comans, tribal peoples residing along the Russian frontiers."
Not exactly Roman Hautala's point, but it's interesting to see so explicitly how "tribalism" functions identically to the ideas of "terrra nullius" and the "Doctrine of Discovery" to legitimize conquest.
What "objective" difference between the Bulghars and the Rus' makes them "tribal" and the Russians a nation with real "frontiers"? Literacy? Urbanism? Scriptural religion? Actually, the Bulghars had all of those things.
So why is it that Russians ruling Tatars and Bashkirs is historically legitimate? Because they are "tribal peoples" on the border of a real nation (Russia).
Those who once were "tribal" have no right to their own land; those whose lands we will never give up must always have been "tribal." This is the anthropological version of the Doctrine of Discovery.
Contesting the idea that mobile pastoralists and the non-Slavic peoples of Central Eurasia must be "tribal peoples" is a key link in decolonizing Russian history.
Is Morris Rossabi consciously shilling for Russian expansion? No, of course, not. But this is a perfect illustration of how uncritical history (and Morris is nothing if not uncritical) naturalizes domination and conquest.
David Sneath's "Headless State": without it you cannot decolonize Russian history.'
