A conversation elsewhere brought memories of this elder queen to mind. 🦇
Photo of a print newspaper obituary entry, with a photo of an older woman wearing a black witch hat. Text:

OBITUARIES
Holly Blair
Holly Blair exploded into glitter and bats on Aug.
17, 2020. She is survived by four spoiled cats, two
stinky dogs, three bad birds, a turtle and an utterly
useless frog named Fred, as well as three children and
a husband of little to no importance. Her remains will
be interred under a tree with the ridiculous multitude
of animals she rescued, both wild and domestic.
Her future plans include drinking beer with Terry
Pratchett and flying across the moon on her broom-
stick on Halloween. She has also promised to com-
municate with us from the beyond via the cockatiel
psyche. We ask that everyone carve extra jack-o'-lanterns on Halloween this year
in her honor. All hail the wicked witch of Juniper Road!
Arrangements are under the care of Wood River Chapel of Hailey, Idaho.
Please visit her memorial page at woodriverchapel.com to share a condolence,
memory or photo.

WordPress as a personal tool: for keeping memories, staying in touch, owning your data. No audience required.
alex.kirk.at
Why My WordPress?
Most WordPress plugins are built to grow your audience. I’ve been going in the opposite direction for years: building tools not to increase reach, but for personal reasons: to stay connected to people I care about, to keep memories that would otherwise scatter, to own the data that documents my own life. That work has added up to something I’d call a coherent vision. And now, with my.wordpress.net, I believe I have contributed to tearing down one of the last walls that have been blocking people from joining me in this experience. ## The wall I have created many of the plugins I’m going to describe already some while ago. They’ve found an audience, but admittedly inside a bubble: people who already had a WordPress, or were technical enough to spin one up just to try something. But I believe the personal use of WordPress goes beyond people who already use WordPress today. It is not well known that WordPress is a pretty good platform to run just for your own or your small social circle’s benefit. Your free WordPress without setup at my.wordpress.net To try a plugin that makes WordPress personally useful, you first need a WordPress. And setting one up means finding a host, picking a domain, making decisions about a site you’re not even sure you want yet. That’s a publishing commitment, and most people won’t make it just to see if a feed reader or a personal CRM might be useful to them. That’s the wall I kept running into. And that’s why I built my.wordpress.net: a complete WordPress that runs in your browser, no sign-up, no hosting plan, no domain needed. It just behaves like a normal WordPress: you change something, you come back tomorrow, it’s still there. Persistent, and private by default. (This is built on WordPress Playground just with much of the developer-facing complexity removed, playground.wordpress.net will remain.) ## What your personal WordPress can do Once you have a WordPress that’s yours rather than your audience’s, a whole different set of questions becomes interesting. **Keeping memories.** When our first child was born, we wanted to keep a diary. We wanted more than just collecting the photos and videos, we wanted to have a place where we could also write down the stories, the funny things they say, messages in a bottle to them later on. A private blog was the perfect solution for that. And later, with Enable Mastodon Apps, we started using a nice mobile Mastodon app to do it, and grandparents to follow along, who would have thought of that? **Gathering memories.** My daughter had a ski day recently. Photos came in from several different group chats: parents, the teachers. Before Chat to Blog, I would have to save them each and reupload them to my WordPress. But since I can now privately connect it to Beeper (a messaging client that can talk to Signal, Whatsapp, etc) and allows me to put the media directly into a new post and the media library, without any forwarding or downloading. The chat messages can disappear someday and it won’t matter, I still have the blog post. **Staying in touch.** There are people in my life I genuinely care about, where things have faded a little; not because either of us stopped caring, but just because everyone has a busy life. Sometimes all it would take is a reminder to send a quick hello. Personal CRM turns WordPress into a private contact directory for the people who matter to you. Combined with Keeping Contact, it tracks when you last reached out and reminds you when it’s been too long. It’s not a sales tool. It’s just the nudge to actually do it. **What are you reading?** The Friends plugin makes WordPress a feed reader: follow RSS feeds, Atom feeds, ActivityPub accounts. Everything you chose to follow in one timeline, without any algorithm deciding what to surface. Friends 4.0 added three themes: a Google Reader-style interface with keyboard shortcuts (for those who never quite got over losing it in 2013), a Mastodon-style view for people already at home in the Fediverse, and a Block Theme option that integrates with your site’s own design. On a hosted WordPress, you can also participate in the Fediverse directly: follow and be followed, post to your own site and have it federate to Mastodon; and with Enable Mastodon Apps, you can use any Mastodon client to do it. Themes for your Friends Plugin **What articles did you save and actually read?** Post Collection clips articles from the web into your WordPress. Send to E-Reader routes them to your Tolino or Kobo, Kindle or Pocketbook, so the things you saved are the things you actually end up reading, just maybe on a different device on which you saved them. **Keeping family history.** I’ve always enjoyed hearing the little anecdotes from my family, but I wish I’d have a better memory for them. Thus I started keeping a private family wiki where the we collaborate in maintaining a Wikipedia for our family. It feels great to have this family chronicle to pass on. **Longevity.** Right now, in my family, I am the most technical person. What will happen to all those memories in our WordPress? To make sure all those stories can persist, I created Static Archive which turns backups into easily accessible treasure troves. It works by keeping an HTML copy of your posts (and wiki pages) with inline media in your uploads folder, automatically updated every time you publish. It’s not a typical static site generator, it just quietly maintains an archive that is always current. **What do you want to ask your own data?** The AI Assistant empowers you to modify your WordPress through chat. It can create or modify plugins to your liking, theme your site, interact with plugins through abilities that they provide. It pulls AI into your WordPress instead of interacting with it from the outside. This supports local models (for example through LM Studio) as well as OpenAI and Anthropic if you can provide an API key. When announcing My WordPress and also inside my.wordpress.net, we’re using the metaphor of an app because they work like a web app, just hosted on your own WordPress. For the technically inclined: they are indeed plugins, but sometimes multiple working together, installed already configured through a blueprint. The My Apps plugin in action, making it easy to go into your different installed apps ## What this is really about WordPress is a widely available piece of open source software: you have a vast choice of hosts, or you can even install it on your local NAS ( they usually already allow to install WordPress easily). While there are many tools that you can already self-host, each needs individual knowledge to set them up correctly. WordPress can be this one platform that can run all your apps, making it much more accessible. The plugins I mentioned before share a few things in common. Your data lives on your WordPress: contacts, reading lists, saved articles, conversation history. They are not locked into someone else’s service where maybe you can get them out with a data export request, in a format of their choice. But instead, everything lives in one place, and you (or a plugin) can combine it however you want, without involving anyone else. You can modify your WordPress like you want: have plugins created for your needs, modify existing ones to your liking. With AI this is now becoming much more feasible for anyone. And finally, this is all free and open source. No subscriptions, no per-user fees. You can run the software yourself, for as long as you want. ## Getting Started my.wordpress.net can be your starting point. It has its limitations and you might outgrow them. Because it’s a browser-based WordPress, it can reach out to the web to fetch feeds, clip articles, call APIs. But the web can’t reach in: ActivityPub federation, being followed by others, multi-device access: these need a reachable server. But that’s just a natural progression: You start in the browser, discover what you actually want from a personal WordPress, and transfer to a webhost when the networked features become worth it. And if you already have a WordPress, all of this is for you too. Skip my.wordpress.net and proceed to taking back the web for yourself straight away.

Viviane Hesitate by Seth Globepainter in Paris, France. <3 Made You Smile (15 Photos): streetartutopia.com/2026/04/10/stre…
Viviane Hesitate, a poetic street artwork by Seth Globepainter in Paris, France, showing a young girl in a red-and-white dress standing beside a painted hopscotch grid on the pavement, captured mid-moment as she appears unsure whether to take the next step. The composition blends real urban textures with soft, dreamlike elements, creating a quiet scene about childhood, decision-making, and hesitation, with muted tones and gentle contrasts that give the piece a reflective, almost nostalgic atmosphere.

ActivityPub for WordPress @activitypub.blog.activitypub.blog.ap.brid.gy · 02/04/2026
Hashtag discovery in the Fediverse is limited by which servers yours knows about. tags.pub, a global hashtag server by the Social Web Foundation, fills that gap. It collects public posts and redistributes them by hashtag, so your content reaches people across the network. It works out of the box […]
activitypub.blog
Discover more of the Fediverse with tags.pub
One of the best things about the Fediverse is that conversations happen everywhere, across Mastodon, WordPress, Pixelfed, and dozens of other platforms. One of the trickiest things about the Fediverse is finding those conversations in the first place. Hashtags have always been the Fediverse’s answer to discovery. But because the network is decentralized, the posts you see for any given hashtag depend on which servers yours already knows about. If nobody on your server follows someone who posted about `#WordPressFederation`, you’ll never see that post, even though it’s public and out there. tags.pub changes that. ## What Is tags.pub? tags.pub is a global hashtag server built by the Social Web Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to growing the open social web, and an organization Automattic is proud to partner with. The idea is simple: tags.pub collects publicly posted content from across the Fediverse and redistributes it based on hashtags. When you follow a hashtag account like `@photography@tags.pub`, you’ll see posts tagged `#photography` from servers your instance might never have heard of. It fills in the gaps that decentralization naturally creates. The project is open source (AGPL-3.0), privacy-conscious, it doesn’t store post content, images, or media, and respects user controls like `#NoTagsPub` and `#NoBots` opt-outs. ## How It Works on WordPress.com If you’re running a WordPress.com site with the ActivityPub plugin, there’s nothing to configure. tags.pub already works out of the box. Your public posts and their hashtags are discoverable across the Fediverse through tags.pub, and you can follow hashtag accounts from your Following page. ## Connecting a Self-Hosted WordPress Site For self-hosted WordPress sites, head to **Settings → ActivityPub → Settings** and scroll to the **Relay** section. Add one of these URLs: * **Inbox:** `https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____/inbox` * **Shared Inbox:** `https://tags.pub/shared/inbox` This creates a one-way connection where your server sends public posts to tags.pub for hashtag distribution, and your posts become part of the global hashtag network. ## Following Hashtags Once connected, you can also follow specific hashtags by searching for them as accounts. For example, to follow `#WordPress` posts from across the entire Fediverse, follow: @wordpress@tags.pub Any publicly tagged post that reaches tags.pub will be boosted by that account into your timeline. When posts are edited or deleted, tags.pub updates accordingly. ## Privacy and Control tags.pub is designed with user agency in mind: * **Opt out anytime** by adding `#NoTagsPub` or `#NoBots` to your bio, your posts won’t be boosted. * **Block the domain** entirely if you prefer not to interact with the service at all. * **No content storage** , tags.pub doesn’t archive your posts, images, or media. It only maintains boost records. * **Respects blocks** , if someone blocks tags.pub, their content stays out. ## A Step Toward Better Discovery Discoverability is one of the areas we’ve identified on our 2026 roadmap as a key challenge, and services like tags.pub are exactly the kind of infrastructure that helps solve it. By connecting WordPress sites to a global hashtag network, your posts can reach people who care about the same topics, even if they’ve never heard of your blog before. If you’re already using ActivityPub for WordPress, connecting to tags.pub takes less than a minute. Give it a try and let us know how it works for you. Have you noticed more engagement from the wider Fediverse? We’d love to hear about your experience.

Coming soon in Mastodon 4.6 - a redesigned profile page. We've used community feedback and surveys to inform these updates. Our latest blog post explains our design thinking and choices. Here are a few highlights 🧵 blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/03/a-red…
blog.joinmastodon.org
A Redesign for Profiles
Profiles are the primary way for people using Mastodon to ‘meet’ one another on a deeper level – beyond a threaded conversation or search results. You might have noticed that the overall design of Profiles hasn’t been explored in a while, and in the meantime, we’ve heard requests and challenges from people who use Mastodon every day. The profile redesign supports some of our current priorities: * **Make the Fediverse Intuitive.** We want people who are new to Mastodon and the Fediverse to be able to discover and connect with interesting accounts, without having to understand the details of decentralisation. The new Profiles view includes an updated handle explainer, and a new editing experience delivers a more consistent, unified experience across web and native mobile apps. * **A Home for Everyone.** As well as individuals, Mastodon is also home to organisations (NGOs, local governments, software projects, etc) that want to share news and interact with their communities. The layout changes offer us a solid starting point from which to explore features that will help these “institutional users” to make their most out of their presence in the Fediverse. ## Our approach ### Learning from the community In addition to reviewing community requests related to profiles, we surveyed more than 500 people across over 300 servers, to understand what profile information they prioritise when it comes to identifying whether an account is trustworthy (and therefore, worth following). We also analysed patterns from other apps that respondents mentioned they frequently use. ### Technical constraints We’re currently constrained within the existing 3-column layout on desktop. We also know that improvements could be made to the custom fields feature, but structural and backend changes to custom fields were out of scope for this work. ## What’s changing ### Profile viewing #### The new ‘Activity’ tab offers granular filtering of posts Previously, there have been two tabs for “Posts” and “Posts and replies.” It turns out that this was misleading (the “Posts” tab also included boosts); and, that there was no way for you to view an account’s activity with the granularity that you can after following them – no view for Posts only, for example. There are, in fact, 4 distinct views that you may want to see: _Posts_ , _Posts+boosts_ , _Posts+replies_ , or _Posts+boosts+replies_. Providing this granularity led us to adopt a more appropriate UI over displaying each of these as tabs. The new Activity tab has a dropdown menu, allowing you to view any of these combinations by filtering both boosts and replies. It is optimised to work equally well for you on the desktop as on mobile, and also if you use the advanced interface for desktop. #### Featured hashtags are more discoverable and contextual Hashtags can provide you with topic-based discovery. In the new Profile view, you can view hashtags contextually within the Activity tab, and click on them for a filtered view of the account’s tagged posts. #### It’s easier to view all pinned posts Some people have expressed frustration over pinned posts being buried in a carousel. We understand this concern, and are also balancing the needs of people who are browsing others’ profiles who have shared that they want easy access to _recent_ posts. Informed by data on the number of pinned posts across Mastodon profiles, we’ve replaced the carousel with an alternative form of progressive disclosure that allows you to reveal all pinned posts in a single click. #### Updated handle explainers One of our objectives is to make the Fediverse more intuitive for people who are non-technical. We’ve updated the handle explainer card to clarify what handles and servers are. Additionally, the full profile handle (`@user@domain.com`) now displays beneath the account’s display name, even if the account is on the same server as yours. The updated explainer for profile handles. #### Custom fields are more compact Custom fields display side-by-side when possible, making smarter utilisation of the Profile’s vertical space so that you get to the account’s content more swiftly. A more compact design for custom fields. #### Additional changes reduce visual load People must be able to find the content they need. However, when _all_ information displays at once, it impacts your ability to focus and complete tasks. You might notice we’ve given less prominence to a few pieces of information. When introducing changes that add friction, we take into account both the frequency and importance of related actions. **Personal notes:** The ‘Add a personal note’ action does not display as prominently on the profile; it is now accessed within the profile’s overflow menu. If a note exists, it still displays on the profile page, just as it has in the past. **‘Following you’:** The ‘Following you’ badge no longer displays on the profile. People we surveyed ranked this information remarkably low in terms of establishing both trust and interest an account. You still have numerous options to understand whether someone is following you: * **The ‘Follow’ button:** When you’re not following an account but the account follows you, the primary button label displays as “Follow back”. * **The accounts ‘Following’ list:** If the account is following you, you will see yourself at the top of that account’s ‘Following’ list. * **Profile overflow menu:** If the account is following you, a ‘Remove follower’ option appears in the overflow menu. * **Preview cards (desktop):** When hovering over an account, the preview cards still show ‘Follows you’ and ‘You follow each other’ statuses. ## Profile editing ### A unified editing experience Previously, profile editing on web was hidden within account settings. You had to take multiple steps to navigate back to your profile view. The new profile editing experience combines featured hashtags, link verification, and all other profile customisation in a single view. It’s easily accessible from an ‘Edit profile’ button directly on your profile – making switching between viewing and editing more seamless. A screenshot of the redesigned profile editing experience on desktop web. The page shows sections for profile and cover photo editing, display name and bio editing, custom fields, featured hashtags, and profile tab settings. ### More control during image upload You can now crop images, and add alt text to profile and cover photos. A screen recording showing a user zooming and cropping a profile photo within a modal, then clicking on the “Next” button. On the next step, the modal displays a preview of the cropped image and a text field where the user can enter alt text. ### Custom fields and verified links Previously, custom field editing was only available on web, and lacked accessible form labels. Additionally, link verification – a powerful feature for establishing credibility – was hidden in profile settings. Now, you can access link verification instructions directly from the custom field editing experience. You can also now add and edit custom fields in our iOS and Android apps. A zoomed-in view of the interface for editing custom fields, which contains buttons for adding, reordering, changing, and deleting custom fields. Beneath the custom fields, a hyperlinked text reads “How do I add a verified link?” ### Featured hashtags Featured hashtags are a useful way of helping others discover topics you frequently post about. We’ve decreased the friction and guesswork in adding featured hashtags on web: Suggested hashtags will appear on your profile view, and can be bulk added in a single click. For more granular control, hashtags can also be managed within the profile editor. Basic functionality for featured hashtags is now supported on iOS and Android. A screen recording showing the interaction of a user viewing a banner on their own profile that contains suggested hashtags with options to add or dismiss. The user clicks on “Add” and the suggested hashtags are immediately added to their profile. ### Customising tab displays The editing experience includes profile tab display settings, allowing you to hide the ‘Media’ and ‘Featured’ tabs if desired. Replies can also be excluded from the ‘Media’ tab, allowing for a more accurate gallery where creative people may showcase their work. We hope that these additional controls empower both people who use Mastodon day-to-day, and people who represent institutions. Before the 4.6 release, profile tab customisations will only impact a few servers that are testing the new profile experience. After the 4.6 release, these customisations will be reflected on most servers running the latest version of Mastodon. Displays may vary on third-party apps and independent servers. A screenshot of the Profile tab settings modal, which contains three settings allowing users to show/hide the Media tab, show/hide replies on the Media tab, and show/hide the Featured tab. A banner at the bottom of the modal explains that displays may vary on other servers. ## Availability The new design will be visible on `mastodon.social`, and other servers that run nightly builds of Mastodon, from today. The goal is to do some testing ahead of the 4.6 release, and make any adjustments based on feedback (see below). The new look will roll out to all Mastodon servers, as part of Mastodon 4.6, coming in a few weeks. ### We’re open to feedback We’ve shared our thinking, and the choices we made in this redesign, in this post. If you have things you’d like to let us know related to these updates, contact us at **feedback@joinmastodon.org**. We may not be able to respond to every individual message, but we’ll be reading every piece of feedback to inform our future plans.

`human.json` is exactly the kind of nerdy metadata silliness that is designed to amuse me. It’s a protocol to vouch for people’s websites created by Beto Dealmeida. It basically works by offering a little json file with a list of websites one trusts to be human who doesn’t use AI to write their […]

Today I Donated To the Fediverse
Once again, the Internet is under attack, but this time its enemies are back with a vengeance and with more fury than the corporate and government threats of the 90s and early 2000s. The elitist, billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter, the rogue states of US and Isr*l bought TikTok, and now the drug addicts Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, and Larry Ellison are buying up internet security real estate to convert it into a global surveillance network running on AI technology using Palantir and Oracle software. Their plan is to turn the internet into a global surveillance system to build a database about everyone, just like Jeffery Epstein built a blackmail system to build a database of government leaders, celebrities, diplomats, CEOs, and any other important person in compromising situations. The web was supposed to be _for_ us, but now the powers that be are turning it against us. We’re losing critical parts of it bit by bit to sadistic psychopaths with deep pockets and a hard-on for human suffering because they were likely bullied as kids or abused by their own parents. And now they have a hatred for people. https://youtu.be/fZ_65R7yG6k?si=ZyPosiPUBuJi8ra2 Yesterday, I made the conscious decision to abandon mainstream platforms and support independent web services on the Fediverse. Rather than using mainstream social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, I now use indie federated platforms like Pixelfed, Loops, and PeerTube and fund them every month. I don’t mind paying, as long as I’m paying for a cause I believe in. The free in freedom, isn’t free. These platforms don’t have the deep pockets like Big Tech does, so we must donate to them to keep them running, progressing, and to provide alternatives to using the compromised Big Tech platforms. I also set a monthly donation to Internet Archive because, ya know, it’s Internet Archive that also hosts the Wayback Machine, and we need a curator for antiquated internet content. Especially more now than ever since Elon Musk cut their government funding. The evil powers that be are trying desperately to erase any historical evidence that is a threat to their agenda, so they can set up a nihilistic world that not only benefits them, but also one where they can ignore laws and make their own rules. The internet is in danger, and I don’t think people are taking it seriously enough. The fediverse is the future.
