There should be a chess rule that if your kid suddenly runs into the room and starts shouting her hunger games fan theory at you and it causes you to lose an online blitz game on your phone, it doesn't count. That's just not fair.

Putting together a popular school chess club is very difficult, with the exception of high school clubs where it is shockingly simple. Just order pizza for the kids every meeting, thats it, totally foolproof. Get grocery store pizzas and bake it yourself if you're cheap. It will cost like $10.

It occurs to me that the profit motive negatively affects chess improvement as much as anything else There is a strong incentive to push improvers in the direction of specialist "knowledge" that coaches and content providers can provide, instead of the thousands of hours of practice that they can't

Reading the QueenRosieMary blog about Chess GM Christopher Yoo punching a women from behind with numerous witnesses and predictably there is commentator that somehow takes Yoo's side. These animals are not as much the problem as the chess federations/clubs/websites that refuse to confront them.
A post saying: "Lets not jump to conclusions without listening to what Yoo has to say. We’ve seen many cases in which the allegations of a woman were not as initially potrayed and someone’s career can be ended by those allegations. We know nothing about this situation but what the woman said, and apparently there is no evidence but her word. She may be right, but maybe things are not 100% as she paints them. Just saying"

ABC news, Times Magazine, CNN and many others reported the "dire wolf" scam as real. Others (like NPR) more or less did the same but hedged by quoting real scientists saying its all bullshit. If its bullshit why did you publish an article?!?

Kurt Vonnegut man
Kurt Vonnegut tells his wife he's going out to buy an envelope:
"Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man.
You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet?
And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope.
I meet a lot of people. And see some great looking babies. And a fire engine goes by.
And I give them the thumbs up. And I'll ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know. The moral of the story is — we're here on Earth to fart around
And, of course, the computers will do us out of that. And what the computer people don't realize, or they don't care, is we're dancing animals. You know, we love to move around.
And it's like we're not supposed to dance at all anymore."

The Chess content mills continue to be both embarrassingly dumb and concretely harmful. "Lie detectors" are a scam. They've been used to both convict innocent people and exonerate criminals, and now Hikaru et al have used their gigantic platforms to contribute to the problem.

Apparently the corporate media has already decided to accept Trumps framing of everything, even the "liberal" wing. Theres no reason to think Colombia "backed down." They insisted on humane treatment of their citizens, while in transit. Apparently the US agreed. The same thing happened in 2023.

I don't think most realize that classical chess isn't being phased out because the fans want it, its happening because rapid/blitz are a better business model. Corporations don't give customers what they want, they give them what makes the most money. The same is true of online vs. OTB.

Magnus truly is the greatest. Plenty of greats, but they all foolishly tried to play within the rules. Nobody had the guile to negotiate a better deal mid tournament. The rules are the rules? Ok FIDE. Why dont you give me your real best offer so we can get out of here.

The more serious lesson we've learned from the Magnus jeans incident is that apparently you'd need an electron microscope to see the sub-atomicly tiny amount of FIDEs's shit that Magnus is prepared to put up with. If it was Norway Chess, I guarantee you he's still playing.

Many GMs are PRECISELY the sort of person to cheat. Chess comes easy to them, so they lazily assume that cheating will be easy too. Remember this the next time a GM says they "just know" when somebody is cheating, they probably dont know a damn thing.

Absolute disaster for chess that the Champion is 18 Half of chess is middle aged men who have to somehow soldier on after losing to 7th graders, and now you're throwing this in their face? IMO, it should be 35 years old minimum to be WC, I also want some minimum level of joint pain to be GM.

Some people are upset that chess is now permanently over, and I get it, I sort of enjoyed playing myself. What people are forgetting is that no more chess ALSO means no more Kramnik talking about chess, so its hard to say if this is good or bad all things considered.

Think about this. The more complex a game is, the harder it is to learn and the less fun it is in the beginning. Nobody wants to do competitive rules learning. They want to PLAY. Even if checkmate only makes the game 5-10% more complex, that's 5-10% of new players were losing for no benefit.

nojokechris.bsky.social @nojokechris.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
Checkmate shouldn't be part of the rules of chess. Just take the king. It makes the rules more complex without changing anything about how the game functions, all downside with no purpose. Its just an innefficiency that we could drop tomorrow, but won't because we cant think outside the box.

What do we think about promoting to knights, bishops and being silly when the other side won't resign online? Personally, I have no problem with it. If you're not enjoying me promoting a fifth bishop you can end the game at any time. If you're still somehow playing for a result this can only help!

An underrated part of Twitter's decline is paywalling PMs. No more making friends, only algorythmic outrage. It's a good example of how the profit motive naturally alienates people from each other without necessarily ever having that as a specific goal.
