We rewound the movie so many times to figure out why the table had cushioned “arms” like a couch. Turns out … it’s a table that has cushioned arms like a couch. That’s it. Yet another thing this movie has taught me (BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, 1970)

The Birds
The Birds 1963
Watched Jun 11, 2026
TL;DR we are the birds and this is a socialist movie.
This was insane and hilarious. A comedy in fact!
Midway thru the movie (during the first bird attack) my bestie Kit was like "what do the birds represent?" And I was like "idk but I bet it'll become clear by the end." Then the end came and we were both still like .....what do the birds represent.... So we went on YouTube to watch people's film analyses (many are stupid, some are ok) which is where I came across Tippi's interview where she talks about how Alfred Hitchcock was a total creep to her and ruined her career (I didn't know!) and then toh the movie kinda all made sense under this new light that Hitchcock was kind of a predator and misogynist.
Side note: I'm working my way through some of
"the classics" and it sucks that more often than not you watch one and then find out the male director is a POS and abuser and hates women or something like that.

Watching a cheesy ‘69 action pic called STILETTO & the “stars” are completely forgettable (Alex Cord? Patrick O’Neal?) but omg the bit players are a murderers row of future stars: Raul Julia! M Emmet Walsh! Olympia Dukakis! Roy Scheider! Charles Freakin’ Durning! A bad movie but what a time capsule!

Downgraded this from 4 stars to 3.5 stars because of the unbearable preachy copaganda at the end. Also, the movie's about 10-15 minutes too long. But otherwise this is classic stuff.
Huston doesn't get enough credit for contributions to the noir idiom. The lighting and camera angles and music and plot-the doom and disillusionment and failure-this one really has it all.
Kubrick's THE KILLING is a better Hayden-starring heist film, but no shame in being 2nd to Kubrick.
Plus Kubrick had Huston for an example.
This is also the second-best 1950 noir with a lead named "Dix"
", but again, if you're runner up to IN A
LONELY PLACE, that's not so bad.

Just added a half star to my review because it more than held up on second (third?) viewing, mostly because of Bancroft, who can make b-movie dialogue completely believable, and because there are scenes in this movie that are totally original and indelible. Plus you can really feel the settings-that greyhound bus, ugh, l could practically smell it. And that outdoor fashion show-amazing. When she starts to run and ditches her stunning Jean-Louis organdy cape, lol, now that's action! And then she can't really run because of tight dress and heels so he picks her up and carries her?! Into a cab?! Which Won't take off fast enough because the lady who just exited the cab insists on quibbling over 10c she thinks she's owed in change!? And she's wrong?! And apologizes?! Perversely banal.
Mesmerizing. Hypnotic.
Aldo Ray is a blank lunk, but it works. The sadism of the bad guys is incandescent. Otherworldly.
Brian Keith is cruel but his gleefully demented partner makes him look like a puppy. Mountain noir *and* City noir in one tight 80min package.
Gotta stop writing before I talk myself into another half star.

Pleasant enough. Could've been more everything: more exciting, more funny, more moving, etc.
There are gigantic plot holes and implausibilities.
But it's a good L.A. movie-very of the city, lots of terrible beauty. The chase scenes are decent. The characters are likable (this may actually be more bug than feature, actually). In the end it's not dark enough for me. Everyone's too decent. Poor Barry Keoghan had to take all the Badness upon himself, embody it, radiate it. Best performance in the movie. The Hemsworth guy is perfectly cast to play someone handsome and VACANT.
Whatever. It's not great but I was not bored.
PS Jennifer-Jason Leigh! This movie needed way more of her (true of every movie)

Not generally a fan of "serial killer" movies (including beloved films like ZODIAC, which I found boring), but I adore this one, mostly because it doesn't showcase the act of killing. We see aftermath photos and watch the killer toy w/ a couple of targets, so there's psychological horror, but there's very little graphic violence. The movie never feels cheap or exploitative. It's basically a police procedural... until halfway through when it absolutely zags and becomes a (stunning, touching, horrifying) portrait of the killer himself. As soon as Noonan enters the picture, it goes from Good to Great and stays there. When he takes Joan Allen to touch a tiger on the veterinarian's operating table, I was like
"this is one of the most amazing shots in cinema history!" William Petersen is nominally the star of this movie, but Noonan and Allen are the ones I remember. RIP Tom Noonan-you did some masterful work here and everyone should see it.

Mix one part Double Indemnity and one part Out of the Past, then thin it out with a lot of tap water and throw it all in the dirt and you've got this movie-all the trappings of a proper noir (voiceover, schemer in over his head, Jane Greer, etc.) but starring the guy from "Father Knows Best." Fred MacMurray could play against type (beautifully), Robert Young cannot. He does his best Walter Neff imitation (down to calling Susan Hayward "baby" all the time), but no dice. He doesn't have the heft or the potential menace.
Maybe the dumbest ending of any "noir" I've ever seen. Supposed to be some kind of O. Henry ironic twist. But oh brother, no. Just silly.
