I think if you want the modal reader to be aware of what you’re citing, keep them inline, and if you want the modal reader to be unaware, make them endnotes

yeah i remember giving this some thought when i was doing the fussy thesis submission stuff. it made me feel like a real square about intellectual property, but i was like, no, people are not permitted to change the content of this as they like. i would like the content to remain the way it is

certainly a view with an illustrious history. it's always struck me as perverse!

does it make any moral difference whether you're mean to another human being, who is conscious and will feel bad as a result, or an LLM, that is not conscious and will not feel any type of way as a result? yeah i'd say that makes a pretty big difference. that's the main thing that's bad about it

it's cool that 'moral psychology' means both 'we ran 1000 surveys to determine the exact features of the switch that make people pull the lever in the trolley problem' and 'am i right to be annoyed when my friend forgets i don't like cheesecake?'

What's surprising is that in many areas the report (as a whole) seems to equate working on 'politically charged' topics with a decline in quality and rigor. But of course there's always the possibility that increasing rigor requires working on politically charged topics!

noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 16h
sorry if that was a bit elliptical. but i mean, does that chart in any way support the conclusion of the report? i don't really see how it could. is it, instead, apt to be shared on twitter by people who are culture warring about the humanities in a much less erudite way? definitely!
a deterioration in scholarly standards fueled by the substitution of political criteria for properly scholarly criteria in the assessment of research and a more general repudiation of long-standing ideals of rigor and objectivity.

i do acknowledge that's potentially uncollegial in a certain sort of way. (though the report is not scholarship, which, i think, attenuates the objection.) instance of a more general tension among academic values, in my view bsky.app/profile/noam...

i basically think all parts of this report make very little sense when read at face value, and complete sense when read as a volley in the ongoing culture war. so i find it sorta irresistible to read it as such bsky.app/profile/noam...

i take it within the logic of the report, it's supposed to support this claim

noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 17h
I take it you’re supposed to look at that chart and think ‘wow, the field has been *narrowed* because of *nefarious political pressure*’. But, uh, I don’t find myself having that reaction lol

The level of grain at which I think it’s true that there are better and worse projects is so much finer than eg ‘classical music’ vs ‘pop music’ that I wouldn’t expect correlations to show up at that coarse-grained level. But yeah idk, could be

i don't really mind people having preferences concerning the topics that humanists work on—i don't find topics equally interesting personally. (though to be clear, i wouldn't impose my own interests as the guide to what people should work on.) but that's just a different thing from scholarly quality
1262
noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 17h
i think it's a quite bad mistake to think that academic scholarship in the humanities is anything like ranking what the best books or best music genres are, even if you're optimistic about that kind of ranking in general
1332
noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 17h
my general view on this is that you learn exactly nothing about scholarly *quality* by considering the *topics*. to take another example, an excellent, scholarly dissertation can be written about twilight, and a middling, tedious dissertation can be written about moby dick (i'm sure many have been!)

I guess it makes a certain kind of sense that trump would deem the ability to string together coherent, grammatical sentences ‘super intelligence’

noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I guess I would figure ‘super intelligence’ is ‘highly accepted’ in the same sense that chocolate covered pretzels and five episodes of Planet Earth is

predicted observations are not what i'm supposed to do. so i don't know what i am supposed to do with the superposition of frequencies in order to derive predicted observations, to be (dis)confirmed experimentally

noam @noamchompers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
sure, it's in a superposition of frequencies. now how do i derive predicted observations from a superposition? you told me don't think about branching, and you told me don't think about born's rule. so now i just have a superposition, and the two ways i can think of to associate superpositions with
