Today, I'm rolling out a developmental build for SAGE's U.S. presidential election data. These will comprise precinct-level voting returns for every election between 1992 and 2024. 435 of 459 state-years come directly from official government data.

Abstract
Cross-national research on electoral behavior has been bounded by the granularity of comparative election data. Existing archives aggregate to constituency or country level, omit spatial information, or restrict coverage to a small set of well-documented democracies. The Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE) dataset collects lower-house parliamentary and presidential returns for 110 countries and territories at the smallest unit each electoral authority publishes, geocodes the units, and harmonizes party and candidate identifiers across languages. For most countries the unit is a polling station with fewer than a thousand voters; the full dataset carries roughly ten billion votes cast across more than eight million units. The dataset is openly available in tabular and spatial formats, with companion R and Python packages providing direct access. SAGE supports spatial analyses of electoral behavior across democracies and hybrid regimes at a granularity not previously available for cross-national comparison.Map

SAGE brings the availability of election results for the 2019 Indian Lok Sabha election down from an average of 2 million voters per each of 543 constituencies to 1,000 voters across nearly a million polling stations.

Polling station data from SAGE reveal considerable spatial variation in the 2021 Hong Kong elections, with pro-establishment strongholds spread across the New Territories, mixed support patterns through Kowloon, and pockets of opposition votes concentrated on Hong Kong Island.

If you're interested in seeing any detailed election results from the Small-Area Global Elections (SAGE) archive, let me know in the replies. I'll start with parliamentary elections in Poland in 1991 and 2023.

Urban–rural cleavages are seen as a defining political divide. But does this polarization hold worldwide? My new working paper tests this question using an original dataset of granular, geocoded election returns from 106 countries (polling station-level in 70). (1/8)
