Mysteriously fallen Qing Dynasty bowl of the Kangxi period precipitates widely divergent assertions of who should own and display what. The lack of interest in provenance and the leap to loot speak forcefully to 21st-century nationalist cultural politics.

St. Francis' Sermon to the birds always brings to mind this passage from Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov:
“My brother asked the birds to forgive him: that sounds senseless, but it is right; for all is like an ocean, all is flowing and blending; a touch in one place sets up movement at the other end of the earth. It may be senseless to beg forgiveness of the birds, but birds would be happier at your side –a little happier, anyway– and children and all animals, if you yourself were nobler than you are now. It’s all like an ocean, I tell you. Then you would pray to the birds too, consumed by an all-embracing love in a sort of transport, and pray that they too will forgive you your sin.”

St Francis reads a sermon to birds who flock to a tree to listen. A wallpainting at Wissington, Suffolk. Today's the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis in 1226. The Wissington paintings are dated c1280, so it's just possible the artist was alive in the saint's lifetime.

As for numbers, I am sure there are more suicides / deaths on site that I remain unaware of. I agree that it seems like a lot!

I was only able to verify two suicides in that area - Henry Symons actually died in the Cracherode room which is outside of the Enlightenment Gallery but since he was a librarian he's associated w that space & felt there. More details about his death are in the publication below.

Many of the stories I collected at the BM suggest that the so-called objects want museum workers & visitors to know what it feels like to be trapped. It's crossed my mind that for some who are already in a fragile state, who already feel trapped, this may be a bit more than they can bear.

Just read a short story called 'Outside the Door' by E.F. Benson, written in 1912. A murder takes place after a scared chase through a building. The storyteller theorises that the fear may have imprinted on the structure to be experienced as a ghost later. Stone Tape, 60 years before Kneale :)

Currently researching Native performers who were in Paris during the fall of France in 1940, and had to flee the fascists. Here is Molly Spotted Elk’s (Penobscot) 1903-1977, story: She was a vaudeville performer, cabaret dancer, and film actor. After performing in The United States, she moved to Paris in 1931, to experince Paris and perform in a more liberal society. There she met and married French journalist Jean Archambaud. Besides performing, Molly began to research and write her tribe’s history and returned to The States for a few years. In 1938, with war looming, she returned to Paris with her daughter, to be with Archambaud. The blitzkrieg invasion of France in 1940 forced her and her daughter to quickly leave Paris, likely by train though the rail system was soon shut down and somewhere along the way she and her daughter had to cross the Pyrenees, on foot, into Spain. Eventually they reached North America by boat. Molly would never see her husband again, as he died in 1941, possibly in a Nazi work camp. Molly spent the remainder of her life on the Penobscot Reservation in Maine.

Is there any more info about the incident referenced here? A US soldier bombing a shoe shine shop in Durham's Hayti district? I read this a year ago & keep wondering...
A book sitting on a desk titled "Hayti Police" Memoirs of a Former Durham Police Officer by Marshall ThompsonA photographed excerpt from page 57 of the book: "...He treated even the worst customer with the greatest respect.

"Thank you, sir," or "Thank you, madam," he would say to each and every one as they completed their transaction with the shop. All customers were important whenever they entered his store.

He also treated his "shine boys" as men even when they didn't deserve to be treated as such. Mr. Rome only had one hand, the other having been blown off by a grenade that a soldier had left in a seat in his shop. He never let this hinder him in any way. His shoe shine rag was made so that he could place his wrist in an opening on one side of the cloth.

He had, at times, four to twelve young men working for him. Mr. Rome even had white men and, at one time, white women working in his shop. Everyone got along."
