Instead of investing in new technology, $IRDM management bought back shares and paid dividends. They sold out to $RKLB because that was the easy way. They now continue to try and throw sand in the gears of real innovators like $ASTS. The FCC isn't stupid. www.fcc.gov/ecfs/documen...
Ligado’s NGSO Application Raises Significant Concerns
3
• Ligado proposes to launch a 96-satellite NGSO system in partnership with AST
SpaceMobile in addition to operating the single GSO satellite that has been in orbit well
over a decade.
• The SkyTerra Next system would create harmful interference risks for Iridium and other
existing L-band operators.
• It is important that Ligado complete coordination with other L-band users before it is
permitted to operate the SkyTerra Next system.
• Ligado provided an insufficient technical analysis in its application and opposition.
Additional submissions have been incomplete at best and provided to the FCC only
confidentially. Relevant technical information needs to be publicly provided for
stakeholders to assess the interference environment.
• Ligado has sought confidential treatment of technical information that is
traditionally made public in application proceedings.
• Iridium and seven other entities filed a letter asking the FCC to determine that it is
in the public interest for this information to be made public or, in the alternative,
issue a protective order.

Looks like $ASTS made some updates to their German ITU filings. They claim they will support 64-QAM modulation. I asked Claude to provide a summary of the spectral efficiency of that modulation scheme.
description of attachment to the $ASTS ITU filing.Working out the peak spectral efficiency for 64-QAM.
Working out the peak spectral efficiency for 64-QAM.
For 64-QAM, each symbol carries log₂(64) = 6 bits, so the theoretical maximum spectral efficiency is 6 bits/s/Hz, assuming ideal (Nyquist) pulse shaping with no channel coding overhead and one bit-error-free symbol per Hz of bandwidth per second.

A few caveats worth keeping in mind depending on what you're calculating for:

That's the uncoded ceiling. Real systems apply forward error correction (FEC), which trades some raw capacity for reliability. With a coding rate r (e.g., 3/4, 5/6), the effective spectral efficiency becomes 6 × r bits/s/Hz. A common combination like 64-QAM with rate-3/4 coding yields 4.5 bits/s/Hz.
MIMO multiplies this. In systems using spatial multiplexing (common in LTE-Advanced and 5G NR), the 6 bits/s/Hz per spatial stream gets multiplied by the number of independent streams. A 4x4 MIMO configuration with 64-QAM could in principle reach 24 bits/s/Hz before coding overhead.
Shannon's limit is the real ceiling. 64-QAM's 6 bits/s/Hz is only achievable if the channel's SNR is high enough to support it reliably — per Shannon-Hartley, you need roughly SNR ≥ 2⁶ − 1 = 63 (about 18 dB) to sustain 6 bits/s/Hz error-free. Below that SNR, you'd need a lower-order modulation (16-QAM, QPSK) or heavier coding to maintain link reliability, even if the standard supports 64-QAM.
Standards-specific numbers differ. LTE's peak spectral efficiency figures (which factor in reference signals, control overhead, and coding) are lower than the raw 6 bits/s/Hz — closer to 4-5 bits/s/Hz for 64-QAM configurations in practice.
If you're working through a specific standard (LTE, NR, Wi-Fi) or want the full MCS table comparison against 16-QAM/256-QAM, let me know and I can pull the exact figures.

Re: Notice of Ex Parte Presentation, MB Docket No. 26-131
To Ms. Dortch:
On Wednesday, September 17, 2026, Frequency Forward (FF) and the Media Action Center (MAC) met
with Commissioner Anna Gomez and members of her staff to discuss the groups’ work fighting on behalf
of ABC viewers across the country to protect the First Amendment and ensure they have standing in
Chairman Brendan Carr’s investigation of the eight Disney-owned ABC television stations, including his
call for early license renewal applications as well as any issues that may be designated for hearing.
Commissioner Gomez was joined by Deena Shetler, Chief of Staff and Legal Advisor, and Jonathan
Uriarte, Strategic Communications and Policy Advisor. Attendees representing FF and MAC included
Elizabeth Battiste, Board Chair of Frequency Forward; Sue Wilson, Executive Director of the Media
Action Center; and Arthur Belendiuk of Smithwick & Belendiuk, P.C.
During the meeting, Ms. Battiste provided an overview of Frequency Forward. She explained why it was
necessary for the organization to join the Media Action Center to file a Petition to Deny,1 demanding the
FCC grant Disney’s renewal applications immediately and warned that if Disney agrees to restrict its
speech or editorial independence to secure those renewals, the groups will seek license revocation. As
parties to the FCC proceeding, the petitioners gained procedural rights unavailable to informal
commenters and preserved a pathway to challenge the Commission’s actions in court, if necessary.

Some interesting comments from the CFO of $TMUS trashing the $SPCX plans to compete in the cellular business. $ASTS is the ideal partner for D2D connectivity and it is only a matter of time before that is obvious.
$ASTS
: 🚨 T-MOBILE CFO DRESSES DOWN STARLINK DIRECT-TO-CELL SERVICE. REITERATES THAT T-MOBILE WILL NOT ENABLE A STARLINK MVNO SERVICE OR ALLOW A "BACKDOOR" TRANSACTION TO ACCESS MVNO. FINDS STARLINK'S FEMTOCELL STRATEGY PROBLEMATIC AND UNFATHOMABLE.

Q - Michael Rollins:

So maybe just extending this question on future potential competition. So you referenced earlier Starlink and Leo's and on the one-hand, you've got your direct-to-device partnership with StarLink. And on the other hand, there's the question of whether they're going to become a direct competitor to you, whether they do an MVNO, build, buy, what is the risk from that? Like how are you looking at that? And do you have any interest in giving StarLink and MVNO?

A - Peter Osvaldik:

Yeah. Well, the answer to that is no for all the reasons that we've stated before. I think one of the most fascinating things and kind of what's shown you what's really happening there is imagine if we as a management team over the course of two months changed the strategy to how we're going to roll-out a wireless network like a dozen times, it would laugh us out-of-the room and kick me out-of-the management team appropriately.

So when you kind of look-back, it was, well, direct-to-cell is going to like take care of all terrestrial networks, it's gone. We went out there and helped since we co-developed this with them, understand the physics. The physics just don't allow direct-to-cell to be a substitute product, right? You're 350 kilometers up. As we all know in the wireless space, signal strength diminishes with the square of distance. So it's not linear, it's the square of distance.

So when you're 350 kilometers away, the allowable power limits and what this device can actually do from an upload perspective means by the time you've gotten to here, you have so little signal strength left or what we call link budget. You can't get through buildings, walls, you can't even get through a Tesla windscreen, right? So that's l…So as soon as we kind of put that out there, now it's on to the next thing, but we're going to have an MVNO. I think we certainly put out our rationale and how we think about MVNO partnerships and how this doesn't fit the nature of where we would want an MVNO because we already have the ability to compete for these customers tremendously well ourselves. Then it was going to be a backdoor MVNO by buying some other company, who I think we're all very clear. There are change control provisions, that's not a path to do it. Then it was going to be through FCC required roaming, well, that doesn't work because that's not on data, which kind of hard to have a network without data if you only have voice. And the latest one, which I think everybody is kind of in the note kind of laughing at and has betrayed the fact that there is no strategy there is the femtocell strategy, where we estimate you'd need probably over 1 billion femtocells to have the equivalent outdoor coverage with all the interference problems, backhaul problems. I mean, it's
just not fathomable.

And then you had one more in there kind of losing Track of all the different things that they've said is we're going to build our own network. Well, you have no path to the right level of spectrum assets. You need the layer cake, the low-band, the mid-band, you've got to deploy them in a way that we've done and you've got to lead from a tech perspective. And I would also just -- I step-back and said, well, hold-on, on your earnings call, you're saying, I have AI data centers with a payback of a year to a year and a half and I'm going to spend the $100 plus billion on building a fourth -- non-competitive network, either on the world's worst capital allocator or this isn't really going to happen.

I'm going to focus over here. So it's just -- it's not a competitive threat from a wireless perspective at all. On the broadband side, it's a different answer. I think it's solve some of these challenges because your differ…

I asked Claude to help me assess how much electricity Canada is exporting to the US and it is a substantial amount. I asked how much was under long term contract and it is about 40-65% depending on how much hydro power is available.
Long-term contract vs. spot

Historically this was overwhelmingly spot and short-term — opportunistic surplus sales into NYISO, ISO-NE, MISO, and the WECC market. That's changed sharply in 2026:

Contract	Volume	Term
CHPE → NYSERDA	~10.4 TWh/yr
NYSERDA
	25 years, from June 1, 2026, ~$97.50/MWh year one
HVDC World

NECEC → Mass. utilities	9.45 TWh/yr
Hydro-Québec
	20 years
Avangrid

HQ → Vermont	~1.3 TWh/yr, up to 225 MW
Hydro-Québec
	through 2038
Hydro-Québec

Manitoba Hydro → Midwest	Minnesota Power, WPS, plus a 200 MW summer capacity sale and up to 350 MW seasonal diversity exchange with Northern States Power beginning May 1, 2025
S&P Global
	5–15 yr

So roughly 21–24 TWh/yr is now under firm long-term contract — against total exports that ran ~35 TWh in 2024 and averaged ~59 TWh over the prior decade. Depending on water conditions, that's anywhere from about 40% to 65% contracted, versus maybe 15–20% before 2026. Everything else — essentially all of Ontario's IESO exports and all of Powerex's BC trading — is hourly and day-ahead market transactions with no contractual obligation behind them.

Two caveats worth flagging: very little of this is a capacity sale in the US resource-adequacy sense (it's energy with delivery obligations), and political risk is now live — Manitoba let 500 MW of Xcel/NSP contracts lapse in 2025, and NECEC flows stopped entirely from January 24–26, 2026 as Québec limited exports to serve domestic demand during an Arctic cold front.
