#HomeAutomation #HomeAssistant question: I'd like to monitor temperature in 4 rooms, and drive a smart outlet in each room based on its temperature and time of day. I'm seeing temp probes that use Zigbee or Bluetooth meshes... I have no experience in this. Any advice what I should use?

Getting people on bikes is not rocket science. The project *is* the network. You can't just do short disjoint segments of gold-plated mid-block cross-sections. Users need to consistently feel that the city has prioritized their comfort and safety at every crossing. Just like Seville, or Bogata […]

On the Minneapolis BRT, the #MetroTransit TRIP agent asked for my fare.. I pulled out my Go card.. They asked "did you swipe it outside?". I said "yes".. and that was it. I asked if they didn't have a reader, and they answered that there aren't enough readers. (!) Very strange.

#nura #postmarketOS question about PMbootstrap: I've made a bootstrap on USB memory stick twice, with full disk encryption and without. Both times, when I try it on my chromebook at Developer-Options-->Boot-USB (or Control-U), I get a "no kernel found on USB/SD" message. I tried two […]

I did a likely "farewell to summer" bike ride today, mostly the #Minneapolis Greenway/South Cedar Lake Trail, plus North Cedar Lake Trail and River Road. Park drinking fountains confirmed off (boo, hiss), but I was prepared and brought 1.5L water.

Anybody notice a recent change to #Apple iMessage and #RCS? I have a SMS/MMS phone (not google, not apple). In a chat with two iPhone users, I am.not receiving messages either of them send, but they see messages I send. I looked at the Mac of one of them: when they start sending to me, the […]

Rhinowalk 20L panniers: the plastic backplate broke. Maybe from too much weight, potholes & speed. And 10 years of commutes. I'm trying to decide if I should drill out the 9 rivets, replace plastic board with a $3 cutting board, and re-rivet . #bikeTooter

My #Android (grapheneOS) phone has mostly apps from F-Droid, but a few from Play Store (Aurora). I'd like to remove any Play Store apps that I don't need. Is there a way to "show me apps I installed from Play Store"? If I open Aurora and check My Apps, it lists most of my F-Droid apps too.

My Ego snowblower has 2 batteries. One pauses 3-4 times during charge, and the charger displays a red "thermometer" icon for 1-2 minutes, then charging resumes. It still charges, but.. is this concerning? I think the 3 year warranty is almost up.

Every now and then we need to replenish large items: packs of drinks, flour, detergent, etc., we fill a large cart in a grocery store, and then haul everything back via carshare. Yesterday was that day, and I told her “I bet I can carry everything by bike”. Voila! #BikeTooter

The ergo drop bars I were not working at all.. I could get comfy on the hoods, or in the drops, but not both. I replaced with a "compact" bar, and it's muuuch better. Looking at the ergo bar, if I set the drops near level, then the tops sloped sharply down […] [Original post on urbanists.social]

#LibreOffice calc question: If I have (say) a list of purchases (date, amount); and I want to make a column like "running 7-day average"... Then I'd like to do something like =averageIF( A1:A999 , "<A1 -8", B1:B999 ) ...where I want to look at the dates in column A, and if a line's date is […]

Are there goatheads in Minnesota now? I had a pricker stuck to my sock after a ride through Sherburne/Anoka/Ramsey counties. I didn't recognize it as a pricker because it didn't look fuzzy like any pricker I recognized.. more like it was carved out of wood. I pulled it out of my sock, and […]

Anybody with a #Brose #ebike motor (e.g. Specialized) get a squeaky/crunchy sound when the motor is assisting? It sounds a bit like the squeak when you bite into fresh cheese curds... or (for non-midwesterners) like two rubber balls rubbed hard against each other. It doesn't sound like any […]

I take the bus as far as I can in our metro, then ride a bike to my destination. Sometimes, it's a music concert; or to meet someone; or a specialty store. I need to see "where should I bike to catch a bus". And when should I leave, in order to have a […] [Original post on urbanists.social]

I have an AirTag hidden on my #ebike in case it gets stolen. like my MTB, and my wife's ebike did this summer. I have an Android phone (well, grapheneOS, so kinda android-y). Is there a way to track your bike without an iphone? I tried using icloud.com in a web browser, and don't see my airtag […]

One of the most intriguing & misunderstood street design and place-making ideas in the world is the Dutch #Woonerf, or “living street.” When I studied woonerfs while working for the City of Groningen, I learned the key is street design that makes it impossible to drive faster than people can walk.
