Today the Senate will consider passing the Kids Online Safety Act by unanimous consent. My American Action Forum Insight from the summer explores why the knowledge standard in KOSA will inevitably lead to age verification, and what the consequences of that will be for privacy, speech, and innovation

This is not a small error. This is the entire ball game. The Supreme Court was quite clear about the narrowness of its decision. It's exceedingly hard to see how Clare could have misread this as saying that "adults have no right to avoid age verification."

FINALLY, @jrhuddles.bsky.social makes THE key point: age verification impacts not only kids but also adults, including whistleblowers and other privacy-sensitive users who are concerned about providing information for verification. Again, CHILLING EFFECTS!

Hardly any discussion today of the First Amendment. If adults fear that having to prove their age will identify them, their speech will be chilled. You can't wave that problem away by insisting that users *should* trust cryptographic methods or that security will be perfect, as panelists have done

It’s looking more likely that SCOTUS will be asked to resolve a circuit split involving Section 230. This week, the federal district court judge presiding over Anderson v. TikTok granted this motion.

This was great. I found a lot of people I used to follow who weren't on starter packs. h/t @flodebarre.bsky.social Also like that bluesky lets you share a custom app password instead of needing to log in everywhere.

If you continue to see "Invalid Handle" for a while and you've recently updated your username to use your website, you may need to reverify it. In the meantime, give it a moment to resolve on its own 🙏

A better angle would be to consider why the hype about the role of AI misinformation in this election was so wrong and to see what we can learn from those mistakes.

Fun fact: If someone quotes a post of yours in a way that is unwelcome (as is commonplace on Twitter/X) there is a tool to combat the unwanted attention. Simply click the three dot menu on the quote post & click "Detach quote". This removes your post from their quote post. Useful to know, do share!

More than a little chuffed, as a regular reader of Platformer, to be quoted in Platformer's coverage of why KOSA is such a harmful bill.
