Scenes from historic Freehold Raceway on its penultimate day of operation. The nation’s oldest racetrack shuts down Saturday.
Pink and yellow flowers line the winner’s circle at Freehold Raceway as the giant enclosed grandstand looms in the background. An exterior photograph of the beige-bricked building that houses Freehold Raceway. Signage says “Freehold” in green script with “Raceway” in white block letters and then “& Sportsbook” in slightly off-white block letters.A weathered green sign at Freehold Raceway reads “This entrance is open” in white block letters with the word “open” able to be switched. A single can of Coors Light rests atop the sign.A view of Freehold Raceway from inside the grandstand. Two rows of empty stadium-style seats are in the foreground with the oval harness racing track in the background.

Johan Pasch the Elder, The Hen Picture (Hönstavlan), 1747, Oil on canvas, 72.5 x 88 cm (Nationalmuseum, Stockholm). There is an explanation to this painting, but it's probably better without one. #c18th

🧵 A 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian beauty box with original containers and traces of makeup and beauty products! An ancient version of a modern cosmetic beauty case! 📷 Museo Egizio, Turin #AncientBlueSky 🏺 #Archaeology
A sycamore wooden box with separate lid. Dimensions 29.5 cm x 22 cm x 49 cm. The inside of the box is divided into compartments (covered over by the lid in photo). The exterior of the box is decorated with a painted checkerboard pattern, and with a lotus bud and blossom border. The box’s contents are displayed next it. Small jars and containers made of alabaster, others made of blue glass decorated with yellow and white festoons. Some still contain traces of original unguents and fat based creams. Found inside the intact Theban tomb (TT8) of Kha and his wife Merit in 1906. New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep II-III (1428-1351 BC). An inscription, possibly added just before burial, states that the box is a funerary offering for Merit’s spirit.

Small relief depicting the Genii Cucullati (the Hooded Spirits) which was found in one of the vicus buildings at Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian’s Wall. The relief was probably a family shrine, and is on display in the site museum. 📸 My own. #ReliefWednesday #RomanBritain

@garybembridge.bsky.social Welcome to Bluesky! My partner and I enjoy watching your channel and using it as a guide for our trips. What are some less common cruise ports you’d recommend? We recently went on a Japan cruise and it was unforgettable. #travel

Back in June, I biked to the far northwestern point of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, to see a very special place At Uig in 1831 the famous Lewis Chessmen were discovered in coastal dunes. Made of walrus-ivory they are Norwegian, C12th AD. This great carving of the king now stands close by 🤩

A VICTORIAN MERMAN Objects like this were often made from the torsos of monkeys and the tails of fish. They were displayed by showmen like P. T Barnum to audiences who believed they were real. This particular one is on display at the Horniman Museum, London. #skystorians #histmed #histsci
A strange looking creature with a fish tail and animal-like arms with claws. The head looks a bit human, with no hair and sharp teeth.
