New Mets mascot race. The Staten Island Ferry went the wrong way. The giraffe from the Bronx Zoo got out to a big lead but fell when flaunting it. The Queens subway car won, of course. I suspect the Bronx will be the Teddy Roosevelt of this race: It'll never win.

My two main takeaways from the HOF election results: 1) There is no compelling reason NOT to vote for Ichiro. It wasn't an overstuffed ballot. 2) In no way should Omar Vizquel be getting more votes than David Wright, let alone twice as many. And not just because of character.

The one time I was in the same room with Willie Mays: 2004 All-Star Game in Houston, with all of the living members of the 500 Home Run Club on hand. I got pictures of all of them, but Mays was the toughest retired player to get a shot of because of the crowd at his table. RIP to a legend.

Still buzzing after last week's Cooperstown Symposium at the Hall of Fame where I spoke about Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days," saw old friends and made new ones, got a few hits in the town ball game and had dinner next to the plaques. Always 3 of the best days of the year.
