How long before someone tries to rebrand MIRVs as "drone swarm carriers"?

You reach the Gates of Hades & find them guarded by this: (📷: USFWS)
Spooky Season has officially begun, and we’re kicking things off with a three-headed ferret.

OK, technically it’s three black-footed ferrets, but October calls for a little imagination.

Once thought to be extinct, black-footed ferrets are one of North America’s rarest mammals. At the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center, staff work to breed and recover these endangered little creatures and return them to the wild.

Cute? Absolutely. Three-headed monster? Only in October.

I get this isn't your main point here but I don't know that I find it particularly shocking that people who are buddies with Yarvin would have no qualms with owning sentient beings.

Anthropic and OpenAI constantly either releasing spoopy stories about their models "breaking containment" and attacking coolmathgames or constantly trying to claim they've made scientific breakthroughs when the reality seems to be, at best, muddled makes it grating to try and keep up as a non-CS.

Doesn't help the information environment is hostile on both ends. I am still interested in the latest developments in LLMs but unless I shove my head into the academic litterature on them I just get met with ad copy from the commercial vendors.

Delightful fact related to this film, one of the directors, Kaj Pindal, had a scale tramway in his back garden! www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LEk...

In theory maybe but I don't know that the Cross Bronx has any slack capacity wise and I don't think anyone would consider it desirable to just make the air pollution situation even worse on that corridor.

The Cross-Harbor tunnel would be the only viable modal shift option and I have no clue how that would get funded at this point.

I want to agree here but what alternative alignment? The only other route between Newark and Hunts Point would be up the Van Wyck which would be a huge detour and add to the insane amount of truck traffic going to JFK.

Come to think about it, it would be funny to stick a wind up spring on a HV relay so you "crank start" an EV.

Apologies for the unrelated question but given all your recent digitization work I've been wondering, did you hit on a particular fond that has a bunch of studies from the era and gradually working through it or are you somehow finding all the reports from different archives/libraries?

Oh god when I heard how Google just shoved every project into a single giga repo until a few years ago I wanted to shove my head into a cheese grater. And if that's the company whose core product is indexing info so I assume most Valley companies are probably as organized as Id was in the early 90s.

It might be easier to build a list of companies that *don't* sell to both markets given if you build software or hardware you'll probably try to get volume sales to a PD at some point.

It's genuinely embarrassing how dependent Nova Scotia still is on coal generation when they're sitting next to the big blue wind zone. I do hope the accelerated off shore deployment plans go smoothly at least. I wonder if a team will be able to finally make tidal generation work this century too.

God, I don't even know if MS greenlights a second console generation in a timeline where the original Xbox doesn't have Halo as an exclusive. Surely, conservatively over 60% of sales for the first gen were just driven by Halo?

As for the Commonwealth, I have no clue how Burnham would react but Starmer seemed pretty willing to throw us under the bus just to keep pretending the Special Relationship is intact for another 5 minutes.

I want to agree here but given Rutte has been in full boot polishing mode since the start of the term despite threats to another core NATO member, I don't think we can guarantee any response, especially given every member is reliant on US weapons platforms to an extent.

Definitely. Not even necessarily through covert means given how many of the core organizers have been openly courting the US for eons. Silver lining here is they may have DOGE'd out a lot of the senior letter agency staff that could do the real nasty maneuvering on this.

I don't even know how we begin to uncouple signals intel too which is kind of terrifying. Like, what even happens to the CAF personnel at Cheyenne if the oaf decides to fat finger an invasion via tweet? Given how deeply integrated NORAD is could we even realistically pull out within a decade?

Think one of the biggest worries with the scenario too is there's no guarantee of *any* external support. The EU might send a strongly worded letter but given current leadership in the bloc it's not clear they would lift a finger or even issue sanctions.

Best guess, it's just easier for the PMO comms team to publish screenshots to guarantee the information will be presented uniformly across channels without having to keep track of how different platforms embed or don't embed different news sites.

I mean tbf, has anyone actually been able to determine how many "real" users Threads has? As far as I can tell it's something like 98% outrage farming operations to collect FB "creator" pennies and 2% the most credulous people on Earth.

I do not envy the bean counter that has to turn the big dial that decides how many ICCUs go to the production line vs to dealerships for replacement on any given month. That whole saga has probably been causing a load of headaches internally on production projections.

Ohhh good point I hadn't considered how much the increasing complexity of the vehicles would have impacted the % of drivers willing to do maintenance themselves vs just coughing up money to the dealerships.

Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Have the dealerships also been complaining about the longer oil servicing intervals on modern ICE platforms and that just hasn't made it out of the industry press or something?
000
Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
The thing I don't get about that is, while it's true the maintenance load for EVs is much lower, they still have normal wear items like tires and suspension components and vendors have been undermining them on ICE vehicles too with developments like "lifetime" transmission oil.

What I find even more insane is, despite the energy situation, the Big Three have all seemingly doubled down on investments in V8s for consumer vehicles in the last few months which, just, aaaaaaaaaaAAAA

Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Yeah figured people moving their purchases forward because of the credit being killed off would distort the data but the recovery looks incredibly sluggish given the situation. Admittedly, I'm also not a market analyst so the numbers might look less depressing to them?

Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
...somehow an unprecedented energy shock still hasn't been enough to really push up BEV sales in the US (and PHEVs are doing even worse!) so what is happening here for people to still be driving off lots with 60+ grand ICE vehicles.
Chart from showing year-over-year change in sales volume for EVs in the US

Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
Are dealerships really so insanely resistant to pushing EVs that they sabotaged the electrification plans this badly? Do car buyers think cars with charge ports contain satan particles or something? The data might point to more people *thinking* about buying EVs in the US but...

Thing that drives me nuts about this whole mess is GM did put a serious effort and got rewarded with a kick in the balls and I don't know who bears the brunt of the blame here. They finally got the mythical sub-30 grand American EV on lots and it's barely moving units and already discontinued.

One hybrid PV and thermal array apparently went online in the PRC just last year! So if nothing else this conversation at least taught me that even thermal solar generation still has a niche in a world of dirt cheap PV cells.

Oh wild I didn't realize some had been outright shuttered even, turbine replacement must be brutal given the loop corrosion issues. Was shocked to learn searching for info that there's still some new thermal sites going into operation.

To be clear, I think bats would still win out cost wise even assuming full lifecycle just on the basis of economies of scale and the cost being distributed between more sectors (automotive, consumer electronics and so on) but I just wish the generation debate was less of a zero sum debate.
130
Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I am excited to see what kind of price point sodium cells reach in a few years given how uniquely well suited they are for fixed storage sites but we'll still need to account for setting up recycling capacity into the lifecycle cost for bat storage for a fair comparison.
120
Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I definitely sympathize with your perspective but we clearly still need good base load capacity and if there's no hydro capacity in a territory, nuclear seems much preferable than a bunch of gas peaker plants. Accounting for the full lifecycle of components is a mess with any generation type.

I recall reading reflective/molten salt arrays would have the tendency to fry animals that flew into the path of the receiver tower so I assume they would have to turn the mirrors away if a flock flew through them. Granted, reflective arrays are the minority of installs today compared to PV.

Nixy @nixymouse.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
Surely one wind farm or solar array has had to be shut off briefly to protect migratory birds or something along those lines? Don't say this to JAG off about bird windmill deaths like the anti windmill NIMBYs but as a genuine question given all forms of power generation can have impacts on wildlife.

This is kind of a thing already hilariously? Recently learned you can get paid for home charging an EV/PHEV as a carbon credit sink lol. Wouldn't be surprised if a similar program exists for microgeneration. club.grizzl-e.com/en
