That’s a different question, i.e how exactly God grounds morality. My point was driving at the question of whether objective moral duties exist at all. If they do, they need an objective ground. Christianity locates that ground in God’s character.

I share your aversion to Johnson’s actions as they are out of step with what he says he believes. Christianity doesn’t teach “might makes right.” It teaches that God is good by nature, not merely powerful. If power alone made something right, Christians would have no basis to say a tyrant is evil.

My point is about logic: without a higher standard, a cruel person can just say, 'I don't care about cooperation.' We can call them a sociopath, but we can't prove they are breaking a universal rule, only a humam one. That’s all I meant by 'no objective reason.'

You're explaining why empathy works for our species, which is true. If a stronger alien species arrived and thrived by enslaving us, the 'cooperative species' logic would justify harming us. If morality is just what helps a group survive, then 'might makes right' becomes valid for whoever is on top.

No, I said the opposite. I said that you absolutely can have strong morality without belief in God. What I did say was that you have to acknowledge that there’s no objective reason to think that a decision to embrace empathy and kindness is any “better” than someone who embraces a life of cruelty.

I agree that you don’t have to believe in God to have strong morality. There’s plenty of very moral atheists. But if there’s no source for morality outside our own brains then there’s no logical reason to conclude that a life of empathy is “better” than a life of brutal cruelty.

The New Testament agrees with your valid critique of fear-motivated morality. It doesn’t teach, “Be good or else.” In fact, it teaches the exact opposite. Eg It says, “Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has to do with punishment” (1 John 4:18).
