The talks finally stalled, with President Reagan asking if General Secretary Gorbachev would "turn down a historic opportunity because of a single word", referring to his insistence on laboratory testing. Gorbachev asserted that it was a matter of principle, and the summit concluded. A photograph taken of the two departing Höfði House portrays a visibly-angered Reagan and a solemn Gorbachev.[8]

Despite getting unexpectedly close to the potential elimination of all nuclear weapons, the meeting adjourned with no agreement; however, both sides discovered the extent of the concessions the other side was willing to make.[6] Human rights became a subject of productive discussion for the first time. An agreement by Gorbachev to on-site inspections, a continuing American demand which had not been achieved in the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 or the ABM and SALT I pacts of 1972, constituted a significant step forward.[9]

At 17, he was drafted into the South African Army. A stint of guard duty at the Lenz ammunition dump south of Johannesburg confirmed his suspicions that the government was building nuclear weapons. “From the age of 17, I was hunting the South African bomb,” he said at the conference.

After attending the University of the Witwatersrand, he received a scholarship to Oxford, which enabled him to further his quest. For his doctoral dissertation, he chose to study South Africa’s history of electrification, “so I could get into the electricity supply commission’s library and archives, and work out how much electricity they were using to enrich uranium,” he told the BBC.
From there, it was possible to calculate how many nuclear bombs could be produced. Six such bombs had reportedly been made by the end of apartheid in the early 1990s; the United States had initially aided the regime’s nuclear program. Thanks to the system of forced labor, South Africa “made the cheapest electricity in the world,” Dr. Christie said, which aided the process of uranium enrichment and made the country’s nuclear program a magnet for Western support. (South Africa also benefited from its status as a Cold War ally against the Soviet Union.)

Dr. Christie turned his findings over to the A.N.C. Instead of opting for the safety of England — there was the possibility of a lecturer position at Oxford — he returned home and was arrested by South Africa’s Security Police. He had been betrayed by Craig Williamson, a fellow student at Witwatersrand, who had become a spy for the security services and was later granted amnesty by South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

After 48 hours of torture, Dr. Christie wrote a forced confession — “the best thing I ever wrote,” he later told the BBC, noting that he had made sure the confession included “all my recommendations to the African National Congress” about the best way to sabotage Koeberg and other facilities.

Sen. Duckworth Urges Democrats to Not Impeach Anybody and "Get Back to Work" If They Win Majority

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) says Democrats should not impeach "anybody" if they regain control of Congress and "get back to work" on issues like funding of USAID or easing tariffs, which she says are hurting Illinois pork and soybean farmers who trade with China. "I would rather move the ball forward to the benefit of the American people, and if we can do it in a way that allows him to save face, and he doesn't stop us, then that's better for everybody all around," she adds.

lmao what a damning quote
People familiar with Flock’s severance plan tell WIRED that some employees may take the offer amid speculation that the company, which has raised about $1.2 billion in venture capital, might resort to selling off parts or all of its business to stay afloat. “When you see enough of the vandalism” targeting Flock cameras this year, one of the people says, “you know the writing is the wall” that something has to change.

Flock CEO Garrett Langley said on the All-In podcast last month that “the biggest damage” caused by the backlash against the company had been “internal morale.”

“Because you go on to X or you go on to Reddit and you go, why are people so mad at us when we've been doing the same thing for nine years?” Langley said. “And why are they so mad at us for things we don't do? And we just want people to be safe.”

Founded in 2017, Flock raised money at a valuation of more than $8 billion in a funding round that closed in April. The company has had many of its contracts either not extended or dropped this year, which could leave it short of revenue goals, according to two of the people. A wave of vandalism targeting its cameras has unexpectedly increased expenses. Without buyouts, Flock almost certainly would have to lay off some staff, one of the people believes.

In an internal announcement, Flock said the separation program provides “greater agency” for its workers and “treats employees with transparency, respect, and choice.” It also described the package as the “most generous” ever offered by the company, roughly double its previous severance offers.

Nire Bryce @nirebryce.breadthcharge.net · 21/09/2026
Applications for Flock’s voluntary severance program opened Friday, and employees have until October 2 to decide whether to leave the company. Flock expects to grant buyouts to the majority of workers who apply, according to the email. People familiar with the program but not authorized to discuss it publicly say they believe that a significant number of the startup’s roughly 1,500 employees may try to depart.

Flock is making the severance offers as it continues to lose customers amid growing frustration across the US about its sprawling network of license plate readers, which have raised concerns about privacy and misuse. In the last month, WIRED has documented officers allegedly abusing Flock to track former romantic partners and colleagues, exposed how widely some agencies share access to the system, shown how little is known about the manufacturing of the devices, and revealed in new detail how much information Flock’s cameras collect based on data from a dismantled Flock device.

Democrats will build on this progress to expand mental health and suicide prevention services for LGBTQI+
people.
[...]
Trump is running on an extreme plan to punish doctors who treat transgender youth and to
ban gender-affirming care, and his MAGA Republican allies have pushed a tidal wave of
extreme anti-LGBTQI+ bills in statehouses across the country. Democrats will vigorously
oppose state and federal bans on gender-affirming health care and respect the role of
parents, families, and doctors – not politicians – in making health care decisions.
Democrats will continue to fight for LGBTQI+ youth by building on President Biden’s historic
actions to ban so-called “conversion therapy”; protecting LGBTQI+ children from bullying
and discrimination; guaranteeing that transgender students are treated fairly and with
respect at school; and ending the homeless crisis among LGBTQI+ youth.
LGBTQI+ Americans have long faced threats to their safety just for being who they are.
President Biden launched the LGBTQI+ Community Safety Partnership to provide
community safety trainings, support health care providers who serve the LGBTQI+
community, and support LGBTQI+ communities to report hate crimes, and build
cross-community partnerships to address hate-fueled violence. The Justice Department is
taking an all-of-department approach to protecting LGBTQI+ rights. Democrats will end
violence against transgender Americans, especially Black and brown transgender women, and prioritize the investigation of hate crimes against non-binary and transgender people

the angry trans people's demands are actually pretty mid, like two press releases and a signal of hamhanded contrition. if we wanted to actually get progress we'd hold every midterm hostage until the dem party actually upholds it's platform.
LGBTQI+
For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live authentically and
proudly, even when it meant putting their lives and livelihoods at risk. LGBTQI+ Americans
continue to inspire and bring hope to all people seeking a life true to who they are, and to
enrich every aspect of American life. But the fight for equality is far from over, as the
LGBTQI+ community continues to face attacks and bigotry in states across the country.
Democrats are committed to defending LGBTQI+ rights.
President Biden is committed to leading the most pro-equality Administration in history.
[...]
When a person can be married in the morning and thrown out of a restaurant for being gay
in the afternoon, something is still wrong. That’s why Democrats will pass the Equality Act to
codify protections for LGBTQI+ Americans and their families. We will prohibit employment
discrimination in the federal government, including contractors, and make federally-funded
seniors programs LGBTQI+ inclusive. And we have and will continue to make great strides in
protecting LGBTQI+ children and prospective parents in the adoption and foster care
systems.

Statement of Methodology

This survey of 500 registered voters in New York City was conducted September 1-September 3, 2026, and is based on live telephone interviews of adults 18 years of age or older, residing in all five boroughs of New York City. Quota and demographic information -- including region, race, and age -- were determined from the most recent voter registration list provided by Aristotle Data Services. The margin of error for results based on the total sample is +/- 4.4 percentage points. Error margins increase for smaller subgroups in the cross-tabulation document above. All surveys may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.

the headline sounds like a crank because it was written in 2018 and i have no idea who the author is so he may be, but: mmabeuf.medium.com/maos-study-g... this article describes the shape of a way out (if you can think a bit abstractly) that scales ok, and is kind of really simple good advice
One technique the Chinese Communists used was to put politically un-advanced people in a study group with people who were only a little bit ahead of them, so the un-advanced could still identify with them, and see a path forward. New information was introduced gradually. People weren’t bombarded with all of the critiques and correct ideas at the outset. The process of changing somebody’s mind is understood as a path along a gradient, no as the flipping of a binary switch. The “Lone Conspiracy Theorist On the Hunt for The Truth” is one narrative and the “Vanguard Party” is another. But there isn’t really in interstitial narrative to show the transition from one to the other. But there are plenty of fake narratives of contrarian enlightenment there.

Mao’s study groups were about changing people’s relations to each other so that the could engage in productive economic activity — changing the relation to the means of production by either further building the party, fighting the guerrilla war, or building an industrial project. Concrete things with goals that could be assessed, so the group would have immediate feedback to understand its own understanding, and apply its own theories. Less fighting over social capital and correctness because correctness could be concretely demonstrated. Relating knowledge back to your local circumstances, and bringing up the people who were just a little bit behind you was what generated that gradient of interstitial narratives of transformation that could be used to bring somebody to the truth.

But in the Western implementation you get the cult. Even in the therapy group, it’s just people intensifying their intimacy with strangers, turned inwards, no concrete affirmation of whose ideas are correct. It recapitulates the toxicity of the bourgeois family unit. And the arbitrarily-delineated social media social unit (“these people are important to be me because we all post in the same group chat”) just transfers the cult dynamic onto

Fox News Twitter says

Some men are skipping showers before dates to embrace a new trend called "pheromone- maxxing," hoping their natural scent will make them more attractive.
But experts say the science behind the dating strategy is far from settled:
"There is no evidence of a consistent and strong behavioral response to any human-produced chemical cue. To date, scientists have collected evidence for possible pheromone effects but have not definitively identified a single human pheromone," Scientific American explained.
