Exactly. Sometimes a style is suddenly everywhere because it’s the same people working everywhere! And a lot of the 00s VFX artists started their careers working with Trumbull and Stan Winston, so there’s like entire cohorts of influence moving together.

Part of this is the specific *people* on BSG’s VFX had a big influence. Gary Hurtzel, Doug Drexler, the whole Zoic team went on to work on a lot of other stuff, bringing their style and workflows with them.

Also corporations are large groups of people with many different viewpoints working with many different incentives.

One other factor here is the high risk of nondelivery from furry artists. About 50% of the pieces I order from small artists aren’t delivered, so the expected value is half as much. That’s why prices are so low until someone has enough reputation for customers to expect reliable delivery.

Waiiitaminit, I think I know where this story is going.
Screenshot of an excerpt from the linked article, in faux Middle English:

So þei bounden me hond and foot and ledden me to þe one þei callede Maiſter, of whom I hadde herd so muchel and knewe so litel.

Þe sayde Maiſter, what that hee apperid bifore me, was verely a Deuill, or so me þouȝte, for neuer in al my lyf hadde I beholden so foule a creature. Hee bore a blak clok þat heng to þe grounde, and ſpake neuer a worde. Bot his countenaunce was hidous and so dredful þat my blood wexed colde to loken on hym. For he hadde nat þe visage of a man bot of a beest, wiþ þe teeþ and ſnoute of a wulf, scharpe and crueel. And his eres weren longe eres, as of a wulf, and bihynde him þer heng a gret tayl, as wulf haþ. And hys eyen schon in þe derknesse lyke brennyng coles.

“What wolden ȝe wiþ mee, ȝe heþene?” aſked I, þouȝ myn voys quaked and I hadde litel hope of eny merci.

There’s something timeless about this, like it wouldn’t seem out of place in a museum exhibit of century-old art. The colors are beautifully done.

As always, Star Trek leads the way in onscreen representation.
Holly Hunter, as Chancellor Nahla Ake, sitting very idiosyncratically in the captain’s chair. Still from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

There’s also this much older and bulkier paper, 358 pages of government work, but [Diamond et al 2019] is the better regarded recent science. www.huduser.gov/portal/sites...

Sorry, my fault for replying at 3am. This is the paper I meant to link: www.nber.org/system/files... www.aeaweb.org/articles/pdf... The mechanism is basically: rent control -> condo conversion -> less rental availability -> higher rents for anyone moving in.

Yeah, it’s the consequence of deterring new housing. There’s also a secondary mechanism that turning rental homes into owner homes without adding supply drives up prices because owners have to pay more up front, get tax breaks if they don’t move, etc.

How policy impacts new apartments matters a lot. Large buildings house a lot more people per land than small ones, but it takes a huge investment to build them, and the more costly they are the fewer homes there are for people who can’t afford houses. (I’m a housing activist irl)

Nineteen @nineteen.bsky.social · 18/12/2025
This is essentially mandating condo conversion of rental apartments. Historically that tends to reduce available rental housing and makes existing house more expensive. It also deters new apartment buildings. There’s a few studies measuring outcomes, eg assets.aeaweb.org/asset-server...

Twenty minutes into this party and people are already talking about the objects in their homes. Party conversations always converge towards enumerating objects in homes. Why is this.
