This attitude is just honestly annoying to me because really it just feels like to me what these people want is straightforward genre fiction that is more about escapism and immersion and then looking in the wrong spaces for it because it happens to be in a zeitgeist at the moment. Its this tweet

So, how about that Cartoon Network giga leak, huh? The funniest thing to come out of it was the twist that info on the infamous “Special Ed” episode of “Ed, Edd n Eddy” unsurfaced… And it was just the working title to the one where the Eds babysits Sarah & Sarah demands to be treated like a queen.

It isn't just being haphazardly deployed because the writer hates genre fiction, often they really respect it, but it's serving a greater point that you are unwilling to engage with.

Likewise, Rick and Morty, which is the other ur-example of this, does this because Rick is a deeply cynical person who's seen most of this before, why would he not roll his eyes when he's encountering yet another sci-fi pastiche

Like not to make too fine of a point on this but The Avengers (2012) utilizes self-aware elements and jokes because it's doing something with them. It's why Phil Coulson dies in that movie. I could elaborate but you don't even really need to think that hard on how it's used.
