Adapted from a personal photograph, this illustration evokes the style of traditional Japanese mushroom art. Accomplished via a prompt using Google Pics. Image and message in entirety is beautiful even with imperfections in the appearance of Scaly Vase Chanterelle.

This illustration is based on a personal photo of Scaly Vase Chanterelle growing in Montana. It is a beautiful mushroom; it can grow to eight inches in height. The orange, scaled interior "cap" is merged with the stipe creating a vase-like form. In fact the central part of the cap is sunken forming a "throat". The cap underside and the cap are distinctly wrinkled and colored tannish. My photo captures these mushrooms emerging from the soil of the forest understory.
It seemed a perfect image for AI to convert to an illustration, artwork...especially themed to Japanese artwork.

Song from songbirds ceased with the heat of summer. However, a Lolo, MT group of Evening Grosbeak still vocalizing when walking or working on garden. Tim Spahr of xeno-canto (xeno-canto.org/217020/player) shared a recording (sharp trill and dry rattle) from Billings, MT for context.

Evening Grosbeak (Coccothraustes vespertinus) is a large, chunky finch. It measures eight inches in length with a fourteen inch wingspan (Sibley 2025). Males are striking; they have a dark brown head with a bright yellow band between the dark eyes. The conical bill is greenish-yellow and seems out of proportion to head size (large). Chest, belly are uniformly a burnt yellow color. Mantle and back are similarly colored. Even with the black wings folded a large white patch is evident. The tail is short, slightly notched and all black.

Female Great Spangled Fritillary now being seen on w-c Montana landscape. This is the largest species (3 inch wingspan) in the Fritillary genus. Also, perfect example of sexual dimorphism: male upperwing entirely orange with a cinnamon disk ventrally.

Female Great Spangled Fritillary are rarely seen before August, in aestivation before then (James & Nunnallee 2011). Lacking dominant orange coloration of males and other "silverspot" species. Female patterned similarly ventrally as a male with the disk colored a dark chocolate brown, not cinnamon. The trailing half of the female upperwing is ivory/yellowish color; the base of these wings are a dark chocolate color. A male is "characterized by its orange colour above with five black dashes near forewing base and several irregular black dashes at the base of the hindwing. In addition, two rows of black crescents run along the edges of the wings" (Wikipedia https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/1456562-Argynnis-cybele#articles-tab).
