Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 05/01/2026Admin data tends to be good/more accurate for some things, but not uniformly. Its clearly wrong that admin data is always better for everything. It also doesn’t have to be fraud - there’s fairly well documented errors in education variables in German social security records, for example. 010

Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 10/10/2025I agree re the opportunity - we are lucky and have three replacements posts that we’re currently recruiting for - interestingly we were also lucky in 2020, when we had more. It makes a big difference. 010
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 09/10/2025Not sure about the “missing” bit - UK institutions have financial issues, Netherlands have government cuts etc. I’d say we’re well aware that it’s a buyers market at the moment, but lots of places have no headroom to hire. 100
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 08/10/2025We have a bit on that in section 4.2, we look at spillovers to other supermarkets nearby and other crimes - there’s not a lot of evidence on spillovers. The other bit to keep in mind - shoplifting increases everywhere over the time period - just a lot less strongly at Tesco than elsewhere. 110
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 08/10/2025This started out as Wednesday's undergrad dissertation. Supervising undergrad dissertations has always been one of the aspects of the job I like the most, so it’s particularly nice to see outcomes such as this! Very fun project to do as well! 010

Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 18/12/2024If the school FE captures things like peers, I would expect both to be “big”. My prior would be that the family FE is slightly bigger, but I’d be very surprised if the school FE wasn’t sizeable. 120
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 14/12/2024Not a specialist on automotive industries - but I’ve got a feeling that sick leave rules might not be the main reason for their current crisis… 010
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 14/12/2024Yeah, we switched all econometrics etc. teaching to R now (except for one module teaching python). ChatGPT is also very good at coding in R so switching individually has much lower setup costs now relative to when you switched. 040
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 14/12/2024Usually the turnout is decisive - over the last years there were very few ballots where the yes vote was below 50% and the turnout was over 50% - see eg figure 3 in here arxiv.org/pdf/2401.05183arxiv.org 020
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 12/12/2024That is indeed a good point. Can’t forget about the 4th earl of sandwich and his pivotal role for the national cuisine. 100

Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 12/12/2024Quesadillas tend to be toasted on the outside though? I guess the inside is moist with the melted cheese, but if the outside is moist you have too much guac and salsa on top for too long. 100
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 12/12/2024That qualifies as a sandwich though, no? It’s basically cheese in between “bread”. 110
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 06/12/2024that some of the members who voted for industrial action actually won't be employed at a university anymore by the time a strike comes around (e.g., PGRs, casual staff). I mean you CAN call a strike under these circumstances but I doubt that it would have a big impact... 2/2 020
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 06/12/2024I mean given the numbers they can be reasonably sure that 14% of their members are prepared to take industrial action (assuming that not returning ballots isn't exactly a sign of high mobilisation). There might be a few more who voted against and are willing to strike, but there's also a chance 1/2 110
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 05/12/2024With my labour economist hat on - I think it would be brave for any union to actually call for strikes given that majority and that turnout… 110
Nils Braakmann @nilsbraakmann.bsky.social · 02/12/2024Plus, I don't think anyone stops anyone from saying "look, I'm only going to coauthor with you if you pay me amount X". I mean it's not going to work, but if they hate unpaid projects anyway, it's not as if they're going to lose out on anything they value... 000
